How much electricity does this place consume and who pays the bills?

Mostly gas not electricity. Canberra Glassworks has a massive carbon footprint, and the bills are HEAVILY subsidised by the ratepayers. Glass artists can take and sell the work they produce in the glassworks anywhere they wish, with all the costs subsidised, with no obligation to pay anything like the actual energy cost upon sale of the artworks elsewhere (works pop up in major galleries) and no obligation to reimburse the ratepayers. To give you an example, one artist sells cute little glass touristy objects – they take a great deal of energy as they are cast glass. They sell for $800 in UNlimited editions, and are pumped out by the dozen.

Glassworks loses money hand over fist. It’s middle-class welfare at its worst.
