The Chiefly Stanhope is off to expo in China. But prior to departure he’s calling for nominations for the 2011 ACT Australian of the Year.

“The awards are a testament to the leadership qualities and achievements of individuals who live locally but whose actions have influenced the wider community.

“Nominees may have achieved excellence in their chosen field, made a significant contribution to the local or Australian community or been an inspirational role-model to others.

“I encourage all Canberrans to nominate someone extraordinary for the Australian of the Year awards.

“The winners of the ACT Awards go on to represent the Territory at a national level and will be announced as part of our Australia Day celebrations,” Mr Stanhope said.

Nominations are open in four categories: the Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia’s Local Hero Awards.

There’s an online form for nominating but share with us who you’re putting up and why!

A cricket player? For services to attractive women?

As a long term cricketer, I can assure you that ‘servicing’ of unattractive women is also frequently attempted and also deserves a reward. Although apparently long white pants dont always increase a man’s attractiveness, hence the ‘attempted’ bit. But its the thought that counts.

I believe its time to pick someone who isnt high profile – someone who is picked as a ‘representative’ of those volunteers or inspirational under the radar people. The foster carers or people who support an underprivileged kid through education. The SMH weekend mag often has profiles (the ‘two of us’ column) of the people I am thinking of. I know its a bit of a cop out to pick one person to represent a lot, but why not.

Or why not an organisation – Time magazine has picked various organisations for its ‘person of the year’. Why not the volunteer bushfire brigade. I would pick the surf life savers, I have seen young kids (well, young to me) do fantastic things, but i guess they arent really canberran despite most of the people they rescue being from here.

Or Mark Carmody.

JOHNBOY for Australian of the Year!!!

Along with the team, he’s put together an amazing online community meeting place where people can gather to share their concerns, ideas and opinions about the issues that affect day to day life in the ACT and surrounding areas. He has also provided a DIY alternative to mainstream media allowing everyone to have their say about the news in their own voice on a platform many people will read.

Police Wrap and reports on local law and order issues provide a platform for community engagement with policy and policy writers and important local personalities often take advantage of the opportunity to comment in their own words on RiotACT stories. Moderation is cleverly applied to keep abusive messages from cluttering the discussion but otherwise the readers set the tone of the content by commenting in a way that is logical.

Johnboy has also made RiotACT a hub for the performing arts thanks to podcasts, reviews, articles about major issues such as live music venues and the DIY Wotz On.

Well who else are they going to give it to? A cricket player? For services to attractive women?
