John Hargreaves has announced that he’s taking the fireworks issue to cabinet for a decision on their continued consumer use at the Queen’s Birthday Weekend post 2010.

“The general public will be permitted to purchase and use consumer fireworks over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June this year,” Mr Hargreaves said.

“The fireworks industry is required to order stock well ahead of the long weekend and if fireworks are ever to be banned the Government must give sufficient notice.

“I will be putting a paper to my Cabinet colleagues in the coming months to make a decision once and for all about the future of consumer fireworks in the Territory.

UPDATED: The RSPCA has expressed despair and frustration at the Government’s continued refusal to give in to their demands.

Tell Hargreaves you’re pretty sure young people like them and they’ll be gone by 2010. Tell him people sometimes like to enjoy a bottle of red while watching them and they’ll be gone this year, lest there be less vino for him.

Well he’s certainly not going to ban wine! And he’s got to ban something, be reasonable.

Someone smashed a glass bottle outside my house last night.

ALL GLASS PRODUCTS SHOULD BE BANNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or we could just accept that for every legal, safe activity out there, a small number will find a way to abuse said activity, and that’s the cost of living in a relatively free society. I’ll take the occasional thud in the night over a nanny state any day. I hear burnouts more often, but I’m not about to call for a ban on cars.

and it is the inconsiderate idiots, letter-box vandals, all-night crackers that will eventually spoil the fun for everyone. And guess who will get the blame – yep, the ‘uptight wowsers, hippies, oldies etc…’, when in actuality, if everyone followed the rules, there would be no public outcry against fireworks in the first place. I hope the people who originally terrorised John Hargreave’s cat(ten years ago) are happy with themselves.

Except, unfortunately, not everyone is as responsible as you Berraboy.

Relax everybod, I think Skippy is trolling, or he/she works for JH, or he/she really is the fun police.

When set up properly by responsible adults, a good cracker evening with family and friends while having a BBQ can be a social joy (unless you live within earshot of Skippy, apparently).

Ban bombs for braindead bogans. Good luck to John H. for having the courage to stand up for banning these stupid, pointless and annoying things. Fireworks fans are really just a waste of space.

Yeah, but while there are still legal ones (the lame ones), it is pretty easy to get bungers of various types. Once the legal ones go, I suspect that the illegal ones will becomes scarcer, more expensive, or both.

i think you’re a bit late on stocking up – all the good ones were gone 3 years ago.

they cant possibly make them any tamer

they could take them away. Can’t get any tamer than that.

I’ve been saying for years that I need to stock up on the good ones before they ban them. This year I might finally get around to it.

the boganville anthem

chk chk BOOM – the sound of a dodgy cigarette lighter and a pipe bomb with a short fuse.

No you’re thinking of timed C4 charges. Fireworks are more of a CRACKACKACKACK CRACKACKACKACK or maybe a ZWIZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ-CRAK depending on what you’ve got.

if you have some of the old, large green ones, it definitely is a drain cover remover. hear them going off around tuggers occasionally…

hey does anyone know if fireworks will be sold this year on QBH?

yea…they’re all bloody duds

people who get angry about fireworks just have too short a fuse…

I am pretty sure the LDP would be fer them.

I wonder if a Fireworks Party would do better than the Motorists Party did?

Only in the ACT can you have a non decision…

Possibly they’ve made a decision and are just crapping us again.

Oh they don’t come more offal than this:

Q: What do you get when you cross a dinosaur with fireworks?
A: DINOMITE!

I heard a cracker the other day ….

What no more offal jokes?

Is it true the police caught two suspicious looking men wondering around Charnwood last night – one was dressed as a car battery and the other as a firecracker? Apparently the cops charged one and let the other one off.

I’m here all evening, I recommend the veal….

I think it is a great idea to ban fireworks.

I just think the whole thing has totally been blown out of all proportion.

It’s amazing that fireworks have lasted so long in the ACT.

Yeah I can’t believe they’ve survived this long. In some respects the ACT is very progressive and liberal but in many respects its very ‘pro nanny state’.

Someone should blow the lid on it, alright.

Someone needs a rocket put up their bunger for this lack of decison.

What a bunch of pinwheels.

At least they’ll go out with a bang!

I just hope that Cabinet make the explosive decision. I mean right, make the right decision. And I hope that the right decision is explosive and/or hilarious.

But seriously, caaaaaaaarn.

Non-decision announced…

yeah, I agree, it’s a bit of a fizzer.

Another step toward being a nanny state with citizens who take no responsibility for themselves.
