Love is a battlefield. I mean, SPORT is a battlefield!

In the search to discover which side of the lake is best I thought it would be interesting to see whether it is North or South on top in the stats for local sport.

Football (soccer) is a particular interest of mine so I thought I would start with it. I got all the necessary stats from www.capitalfootball.com.au in its history section. I used from 1980 for the modern history angle but also because it was easier to identify club locations. So to the stats, who is on top?

Men’s Premier League – since 1980 (League Champions) – North has won 9, South has won 19, Unknown – 2 (Luso, CCAE)

Men’s Premier League – since 1980 (Grand Final Winners) – North has won 11, South has won 19, Unknown – 1 (Luso)

Biggest Grand Final win between North v South
– North triumphant – 2008 – Belconnen United defeated Canberra FC 4-1
– South triumphant – 2010 – Canberra FC defeated Belconnen United 6-0
– North v North – 1982 – Belconnen United defeated Downer 7-0
– South v South – 1997 – Olympic defeated Canberra Deakin 4-0

Highest Scoring Grand Final results
– North v South – 2007 – Canberra FC defeated Belconnen United 5-4 – SOUTH WINS

Women’s Premier League – since 1980 (Grand Final Winners) – North has won 11, South has won 17, Unknown – 3 (Sabres, CFA Satellites)

The stats are crystal clear. South is currently on top in football.

That is SOUTH 1 – NORTH 0

Do you know what the stats are for your favourite sport in Canberra? Is North or South on top? In the past or currently?

Geez a few good years and Queanbeyan thinks it’s a real (non-struggle) town.

For Rugby Union looking on the Vikings website the stats are (since 1980):

South (Thanks to Royals and Vikings)

– 15 Wins
North (Wests, Gungahlin, Daramalan and Uni)

– 10 Wins
Queanbeyan

– 6 Wins

So that’s another one for the South,

Good one chewy14, I guess that makes it NORTH 1 (AFL) – SOUTH 2 (Football/Soccer, Rugby)

AFL Canberra, it’s the North.

Since 1980, Ainslie and Belconnen have won 17 to Manuka/Eastlake/Tuggeranong’s 3, with the Sydney Swans winning 4 and Queanbeyan 7. So the North is dominating, with the out-of-towners well ahead of the South as well.

Overall, however, the South is still on top 38-29 thanks to past Manuka and Eastlake glories.

Sean, that’s awesome. I guess that means in terms of modern history NORTH 1 (AFL) – SOUTH 1 (Football/Soccer) in terms of sport so far.

bcrowley,
I am also a football lover but not sure how you came with some of those figures.

‘Men’s Premier League – since 1980 (Grand Final Winners) – North has won 11, South has won 19, Unknown – 1 (Luso) ‘

In the records I can see, Monaro (Go the Panthers :-p) took one of those and Cooma took another. So how did you count those results? They are not ACT teams so have no place in the comparison between North and South.

qbngeek, good point. I have inappropriately ‘appropriated’ Monaro and Cooma’s Grand Final wins as wins for South Canberra. I suppose when I was writing it up I just grouped South Region teams into the South Canberra fold. I would have equally ‘appropriated’ Gundaroo for the North if they had one a Premier League title.

Thanks for the pick-up!
