Northbourne Av / Antill St speed zone?

I received a speeding fine from cameras near the Formula 1 entering Canberra form Sydney end on Northbourne Ave at Antill St Intersection.

The fine says the speed limit is 60.

To my knowledge it is actually 80. My speed was 78. Has there been a recent change from 60 to 80 km/h?

Can anyone help me with this as I live away from Canberra?

I have just received that exact fine in the mail – doing 78 in a 60 zone – Antill and Northbourne intersection. Do you know what date you were booked?
I also thought it was an 80 zone (but checked today and it is 60) however Northbourne is 80 and then drops to 60 and straight after the first sign saying 60, there is a speed camera which has no signposting at all (don’t fixed speed cameras need to have proper signposting? Like those huge blue and white ones in NSW?
PLUS – it is pretty hard to speed through that interestion on any day I go through there because of all the traffic!
A number of reasons I think something a bit dodgy is up…. you are only given a short distance to drop from 80 to 60 and they sneakily put a camera in to catch you… That is not “life saving” policy – that is “revenue raising”. I don’t dispute the validity of making people stick to speed limits – of course that is necessary, but when they go out of their way to fine you, they lose their credibility

Northbourne Ave/Antill St has been 60kph for at least 5 years…

Yeah I got pinged at that one in Sep 2003, and the limit must have dropped not long before then. I travel through that intersection reasonably regularly and wasn’t even aware that it had been reduced until I got the ticket and went to check it out. Then I felt like a dumb arse for not noticing the sign, haha.

Federal Highway and Antil St = 80km’s per hour… outside the Formula 1
Northbourne Ave and Antil St = 60km’s per hour…

I drive past the first one every Monday night, with those annoying bumpy things on the road designed to slow up down… Always doing between 70-80km’s never been booked….

Go have a look at the photo. See if you are on the highway or on northbourne ave.

It is 60 because I was pinged at the same camera 2 years ago when the speed limit first changed.

me too! definetly 60 zone

Northbourne Ave/Antill St has been 60kph for at least 5 years. It changes down from 80kph to 60kph between the Barton Hwy intersection and the Antill St intersection. Anything north of there is at least 80kph last time to my knowledge.

yes the reference to formula 1 motel threw me

The speed limit sign at the top of the descent just past the majura road turn off says 80KPH I have been past that camera a couple of times in the last few weeks at 80KPH and didn’t get a fine – when did the speed limit on the federal Highway drop to 60Kph?

If you follow the google map link in post #1 and actually scroll ahead towards the antill street roundabout you can see the speed camera.

Read the rest of the thread. The OP is clearly wrong with the location he thought he got pinged.

Hercie: That’s not the camera at issue – the OP says “Northbourne Av and Antill St” which is 60, unlike “Federal Hwy and Antill St” which is 80.

It is 60 because I was pinged at the same camera 2 years ago when the speed limit first changed.

Aye, Ryan is correct.

Wait, hang on.

Antill/Northbourne would be the red light/speed camera at the set of lights down at Mouat St, where the limit is 60.

The fixed speed camera near Formule 1 is actually Federal Hwy/Antill St. Northbourne doesn’t start until the interesction with Barton Hwy.

So you would’ve been doing 78 in a 60 zone

Last time I went past there a few months back it was definitely 80.

But between Antil Street/Federal Highway & Barton Highway/Federal Highway the speed limit is 80k’s & I usually do 80k’s past this camera anyway.

Is anyone able to get a current picture of this approach?

It was originally 70 but they reduced it to 60 when the on-road bike lanes were put in.

The google streetview below shows the limit as 80 near Formule 1. However, the streetview images appear to have been taken before the speed camera was installed.

There is another intersection of Antill and Northbourne closer to Dickson, where they have dropped the speed limit to 60 just before the speed camera. I was caught there myself a while back, when they changed the 70 zone to 60 for a bit of revenue raising near the racecourse.
