Justice And Community Safety are informing us that an inmate at the prison has been injured while trying to escape from the exit program.

ACT Corrective Services confirmed today that a male detainee at the ACT’s Transitional Release Centre (TRC) suffered leg injuries in an attempt to leave the centre without permission.

The TRC is a minimum security facility outside the perimeter fence of the AMC where detainees have a degree of freedom of movement into the community as they transition from incarceration to release near the end of their sentence. TRC detainees usually have some form of work outside of the prison during daylight hours.

“AMC staff were alerted to the injury at about midnight and rendered assistance to the detainee while awaiting the ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Policing,” a Justice and Community Safety spokesperson advised.

“Ambulance personnel provided immediate treatment on site then transferred the detainee to hospital where he is being treated for fractures to his leg.”

“ACT Police also attended and investigated the scene. We understand the detainee has been interviewed in hospital and may be charged with attempted escape from lawful custody.”

“The outcome for this detainee is that he will be moved to the Alexander Maconochie Centre on his discharge from hospital. His classification will be reviewed and privileges associated with the transitional release program will be revoked. Whether a further sentence will be imposed will be a matter for the courts following completion of a police investigation,” the spokesperson said.

Needs to work on impulse control and deferred gratification.

Evidently he wanted to cut out the middle man…

Maybe he was scared of losing his warm bed, 3 hot meals a day, free medical attention and his local drug dealer living only a couple of doors away.
