Not the finest of days for the weather bureau

Could today have set a new record for weather bureau inaccuracy?

The good folks at the bureau tipped a maximum for Canberra of 10. It reached 15.

I believe our forecasts are now computer generated from Sydney.

It may be time to review this arrangement.

well 10 to 15 is quite a large error – but not sure whether the complain is warranted. Maybe the rest of us have more realistic expectations.

25 posts! My best in ages!

I imagine the rain just came a bit later than expected – thus more hours of sun before rain makes it warmer… I can imagine that being pretty hard to get spot on.

LOL

I found it annoying – I rugged up expecting cold weather and I’ve had to ditch the jacket and the jumper.

Storm in a teacup is a weather related analogy isn’t it? Are there any others I wonder?

Wikipedia notes the following:

A similar phrase exists in numerous other languages:

Bulgarian: ???? ? ???? ???? Bura v chasha voda
Czech: Bou?e ve sklenici vody
Dutch: Storm in een glas water (a storm in a glass of water)
Esperanto: Granda frakaso en malgranda glaso (a large storm in a small glass)
Estonian: Torm veeklaasis
Finnish: Myrsky vesilasissa
French: une tempête dans un verre d’eau (a storm in a glass of water)
German: ein Sturm im Wasserglas (a storm in a glass of water)
Hebrew: ???? ???? ?? Se’arah bekos teh (storm in a teacup)
Hungarian: Vihar a biliben (“a storm in the potty”)
etc

I wonder if any of these ethnic groups have to put up with totally inane topics as well?

One forecast wrong, that must really hurt their average. Must be now somewhere in the vicinity 99%, no wait 98%!

It utterly beggars belief that Paperboy has been so annoyed by this error in forecast that he saw it fit to post here and for what? Do you want to lead us pitch fork and torch in hand and march to BOM demanding 100%. Are you looking for some one to cradle you and rock you back and forward and whisper in your ear its going to be alright while strocking your hair. Perhaps you are seeking advice.

Well here is the advice, your daddy loved you. Now stop being angry with the world.

Is anybody else frustrated by the precis forecast broadcast by most radio stations? Totally useless at best, and misleading at worst. The precis forecast will often be “rain”… but the rain is expected to fall on the ranges. Or it might be “fine”… but with 30km/h winds.

Same goes for the crappy Weather Active on Foxtel – all that technology and all they can give you is the precis forecast and a crappy picture of a rain cloud.

Bah!

Hey, they did great liast night – they predicted %80 chance of rain. By this morning it was 20% chance so I decided to bring the trail bike into work instead of the big car.

/Applause for BOM.

(Johnboy – we need a pool room for threads with this much Awesome!)

I am happy for them to underquote the correct temp by 5 degrees every day in winter/spring.

Paperboy, that scratching you hear at the front door. That’s an actual life calling you

I too noted this gross failure of service delivery from the Government and was most inconvenienced by being prompted by the erroneous forecast to wear a jacket that was far too thick for the actual weather that occurred.

I am waiting for the media statement from the Opposition demanding the head of the responsible Minister.

And if they can’t predict precisely what I’m going to have for breakfast tomorrow morning they should all be sacked!

He’s probably been watching BTTF2 and getting disappointed that he doesn’t have his hoverboard and pinpoint accurate weather predictions yet…

“It’s pouring rain!”
“Wait 5 more seconds”
*rain stops*
“Too bad the post office isn’t as efficient as the weather service”

4 more years Paperboy…4 more years…

Also can you let facilities know that its 1/2 degree colder in my cubicle that the rest of the building………

i wonder if anyone would bother to ask bom folk if they actually might not concede that such a misprophecying of the weather actually is something of an embarrassment to them… above kinda sounds like all talk from an akubra to me.

Oh my! I’m an uppity pube upset that the weather bureau miscalculated the temperature by a few degrees! I think I’ll write a minute complaining to the OIC. Move on people, nothing to see here…

Because the atmosphere is such a simple system, with so few potential variables, isn’t it.

I too was mildly inconvenienced by someone making a rare error doing a job that I can’t do myself. For shame!!!

I find it amusing the fascination some people have with the weather and how upset they get when the weather man gets it wrong by 5 degrees.

I reckon that overall, they get things pretty right. Certainly accurate enough for me to decide what to do/wear for the day.

OMG someone got the weather wrong!

Dude – grow up.

Ridiculous post of the week. Flame on!

15 is better than 10, so may they continue to get it wrong…

(and I think BoM use the airport weather station anyway)

Computer model of chaotic weather system not achieving total accuracy, lone citizen outraged.
More on this breaking news story as it comes to hand…

Also, if the data is being gathered from across the country, and the same modelling process is producing outputs that BoM bases its predictions on, why does running the process on a computer in Sydney matter to you?
You didn’t think the forecasts for seas and oceans were generated from ship-borne server farms floating off the coast, did you?

Correct threepaws.
On ABC 666 at about 0635 each weekday morning the morning show presenter talks to the BOM duty forecaster at the airport.
Computer generated maybe, but not in Sydney.

I thought the forecasts came from the BOM facility at the airport?
