ACT Policing has apprehended a 23-year-old New South Wales man after a pursuit of a stolen motor vehicle early this morning (Monday, February 13).
Around 3.30am, members of Woden Patrol General Duties were conducting a patrol along Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick when they saw a grey Mazda 3 failing to stop for a red traffic light at the intersection of Nyrang Street and Canberra Avenue. Upon the activation of the police vehicle’s emergency lights and sirens, the Mazda 3 accelerated away from police, travelling through the Quix Service Station.
Police pursued the Mazda 3 through Fyshwick, Narrabundah and Red Hill, before the vehicle struck the gutter on La Perouse Street, Red Hill, causing a tyre to deflate, bringing the car to a stand-still.
As police approached the vehicle, the passenger has exited the vehicle and ran away, avoiding apprehension. As officers attempted to arrest the driver, he punch an officer in the face.
The 23-year-old man was arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House.
No people were injured and the Mazda 3 sustained minor damaged during the pursuit that lasted five minutes and reached a maximum speed of 120km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
The Mazda 3 had been reported stolen on 7 February after being taken during a burglary in Bruce.
