Night markets are coming to Tuggeranong!

Queanbeyan market organiser Kylie Brown is the driving force behind the new markets, which will be held every Friday night in Anketell Street, starting this Friday (1 April).

“I was basically gifted The Queanbeyan Market from the previous organiser, and she was like, ‘here is a place to run an event; go for gold!'”

When she first took over The Queanbeyan Market, Kylie said she started with 20 stallholders but built it up to 220 stalls – so there are high hopes for her new venture.

“Some of my stallholders from The Queanbeyan Market were looking for a night market to get involved with, so I went and did some research and went from there.

“I didn’t expect the Queanbeyan Markets to become such a big event, but when I mentioned the idea to the ACT Event Management team, they said they’re quite happy to support me to start it out small and slowly grow it out and do it right,” Kylie said.

With a passion for community, Kylie’s vision is to create a place of belonging for her 11-year-old son, who has special needs.

“I am a special needs mum, and my son’s in a wheelchair and due to go to high school next year, so what I need is a safe environment where he has the freedom to grow and learn without always having that adult interaction and having that safety base to come back to,” she said.

The mother-daughter team Lydia Baker and her mother Debra will be among the first stallholders on Anketell Street, selling their handmade children’s and women’s clothing at their stall, Fresh Lilly.

“I’m really looking forward to the market,” Lydia said.

“It means a lot to have a market close by because many of the markets we attend we usually have to travel to, so it’s nice to have a local one where I live.

“I love getting involved in community events and being surrounded by locals. It’s nice seeing all the small businesses get together.”

The Tuggeranong community – and everyone else – is invited to attend the Friday Night Market from 4 pm to 9 pm every Friday, kicking off 1 April.

Stalls will sell cupcakes, succulents, clothing, flowers, metal art, house décor, recycled bags, candle stalls, resin chopping boards, custom baubles, Easter gifts and much, much more … and there will be face painting and balloon modelling for kids.
