NSW & ACT or is it should it just be ACT

I see on news.com.au that the national and local news tab have us with NSW and shows a daily telegraph icon. Why?

Do we not have our own news paper? Do we not have our own goverment? Our own isues? We are the Capital City of Australia right?

So should we fight for the change or just leave it. Are we really that sad down here that Sydney is our main source of news?

Seven has changed the weather to show that ACT is the Capital and dosn’t just list us with the towns so lets make every one else fix it.

Sweet dreams. Don’t you know that in the media industry Canberra is treated as ‘regional’, not ‘metropolitan’ or ‘capital’?

News Ltd does not own a Canberra-based newspaper. The Daily Telegraph is the closest News Ltd presence, so that’s why it is spruiked on news.com.au as covering the ACT. It’s not misleading advertising because once a year you may see a story in the Tele about Stanhopeless – and they cover federal politics – but at heart the Tele is a Sydney-oriented news service. News.com.au won’t link to the Canberra Times because it’s a competitor.

The really strange thing is why the major Fairfax Media websites do not link to the Canberra Times (Fairfax owns the Crimes, the Chronicle, and the Queanbeyan Age). You do not see the Canberra Times listed on the Melbourne Age or Sydney Morning Herald homepages, but there are links to the other capital city mastheads for Perth and Brisbane.

That said, the Canberra Times website is truly appalling. If you want to target your ire, I’d suggest demanding improvements to the Crimes website. I reckon there’s been a handful of days in the past month when no news stories have been updated to the home page for more than 24 hours (and even then, a lot of stories are taken from the wire services and so are likely to have no Canberra connection).

Because the Crimes is a Rural Press publication not produced directly by Fairfax media. it is pathetic that the National Capital is treated like a regional centre. Doesn’t happen in Washington, Wellington, London etc.

news.com.au is pure garbage and I don’t take seriously people who send around stories from their website.

It’s a glorified glamour mag in my opinion.

As mentioned previously, use google.com for their news service as they grab their feeds from everyone, including Reuters and AP.

WIN news on the weekend now only shows Sydney weather, regional NSW weather (not ours) and then capital city weather (still not us.) Why do they bother playing the Sydney news here – I’d rather see VIC news, or preferably a round-up of all state news, if we can’t have our own one. I am totally disinterested in NSW politics and traffic issues.

Wow, how insecure we must feel.

Canberra is NOT a major city in the scheme of things. Which is why it is different from Sydney and Melbourne. It you want to live in a giant city, go move to one.

We’re suppose to be the capital of this country which ignores us…

Whilst yes, we do sometimes like to “do things because larger cities are also doing them” I don’t think it’s too much to ask that we have a half decent local news service (Riot ACT excluded), and not treated like an outer suburb of Sydney.

Believe it or not, but I couldn’t give a @$#^ on how traffic is travelling down the M4 in Sydney (except on the very rare occasion I’m actually driving in Sydney), nor could I care less about how interest rate rises will affect the living standard of the average Sydney-sider…

BTW no I don’t want to live in a giant city. Our “local” news has convinced me of that…

They really should just change the NSW \ ACT tab to say NSW… It’s not like they actually have ACT content…

But its good for marketing……..

Are you really that sad that news.com.au is yours?

Do we not have our own news paper

Newcastle has a newspaper, as does Wollongong, Albury and their cousins in Wodonga. I wonder where their issues sit?

Most of the newspapers in those markets are Fairfax owned and have the same similar websites to the CT by clicking the “regional network” tab at the tob of the CT website you go to a page where it show the regional newspapers. Pretty much every other regional paper website has a better local news coverage than the CT does, and they actually present the whole article and not half of it.

Forget http://www.news.com.au – use news.google.com.au instead. At least Google gives a lower rank to trash news, unlike News Ltd/news.com.au, which is entirely trash news.

Possibly because the Canberra Times is owned by Fairfax Media and not News Limited?

As far as the news services from Sydney are concerned, if it happened west of the Blue Mountains then its not worth reporting.

Hoo, boy. No wonder many people interstate have such a low opinion of Canberrans if this is the best you can come up with.

I don’t thin there’s enough celebrity gossip or sex scandal here for the ACT to warrant its own page on news.com.au.

Pretty obvious really.

News.com.au is owned by News Limited to promote their newspapers and magazines. They only link to stories held on publications that they own.

The Canberra Times is owned by Fairfax.

News Ltd don’t publish a Canberra-specific newspaper, so what else are they meant to put? If you don’t like their coverage, pick a different site, there are plenty with ACT news.

It’ll be a cold day in hell before news.com.au has a news item involving Canberra which is not a bashing story, or a story about the house on the hill… They really should just change the NSW \ ACT tab to say NSW… It’s not like they actually have ACT content…
