Nurses memorial to be repaired again

By johnboy - 28 October 2008 16

The NCA informs us that they’re going to have another go at repairing the glass panels in the Nurses Memorial on Anzac Parade (the one which looks like an art-deco public convenience).

It’s the third time one of the panels has broken (previous incidents in 2002 and 2006). While vandals were blamed in the past (odd… as other memorials don’t seem to suffer and nurses are generally well regarded even by stupid kids) this time another cause has been identified:

The report found that the recent breakage is likely to be the result of nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass, a consequence of the manufacturing process.

UPDATED: The NCA have now announced that repairs are complete.

What’s Your opinion?

Well, well, you put up a memorial containing glass panels and it becomes a target for vandals. Who would have thought it. As my father used to tell my sister, if you send out a signal somebody is going to respond to that signal.

So was it vandals the first two times? or have they finally stopped assuming?

Have sledge hammer will smash so say the vandals. IMHO,

WHO THE FRACK THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD THING TO MAKE A MEMORIAL OUT OF FRIGGIN GLASS?

More likely stress in the glass from a lack of annealing … inside the sculpture there used to be a mass of pipes – was it intended to be a water feature and then they had to economise? It does seem incomplete …

Excellent. The nurses deserve to have such a memorial and deserve to have it kept in a manner befitting their service and dedication.

Glass certainly does seem to be pretty expensive whenever you have to replace a windscreen or the neighbourhood kids send a cricket ball flying through the front window.

Actually Granny, I was referring to Ant, Madman, CHW and Mr Evil. I took your comment to be more literal. I also wonder if having identified a problem they have any intention of fixing it, or if they will go the way of most gubmints and leave it for someone else to worry about.

I was actually just wondering if the glass is going to keep on exploding.

I sense a certain sarcastic angst overpowering the usually thoughtful and heartfelt comments of the RiotAct regulars.

The report found that the recent breakage is likely to be the result of nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass, a consequence of the manufacturing process.

So will these ‘nickel sulpide inclusion’ thingies be present in the replacement glass also, or will the new panels be manufactured via a different process?

Like, basically, are these panels just going to keep breaking and how much is it going to cost to maintain this memorial? Can’t they just use that indestructable plastic stuff?

… You know, I never questioned the whole ‘vandals smashed it’ theory – I mean, what hoon COULD resist great big panes of glass… as opposed to concrete and bronze, like the other memorials (DUH).

I have always found the glass reminiscent of the waves of the beach where the Japanese massacred the Aussie nurses and their patients. Not to mention epitomising the women of Australia’s wartime nursing corps… so beautiful, really a fitting memorial, I thought.

Not vandals this time, well that’s something at least. If it was vandals, we wouldn’t be able to comment about it here, because the families of the vandals would come and abuse us for condemning their vandal relatives and friends who were great people and didn’t deserve to be commented-about and were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and were being unfairly targeted by the police.

CLASSIC!!!!
