The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users that the Oaks Estate Bridge on Oaks Estate Road is closed due to rising waters as a result of heavy rainfalls. Motorists are advised to take an alternative route.

Barriers are being erected to alert people of the closure.

Further road closures may be necessary as predicted heavy rain enters the ACT.

The ACT Government apologises for the inconvenience.

For up-to-date information on road closures please call Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

This thread is another excellent reason for dumping the concept of states.

or for having a Capital Territory which consists only of the Parliamentary Triangle, and merging the rest of it back into NSW.

I’d be interested to know how you leap from “no states” to “merging…into…NSW”.

Not so much a leap (I did begin with “or”, by the way), just a slightly more plausible alternative to the idea of an entire continent being governed by a democratic unitary state (whether with, or without, completely subordinate regional governments). I think the fiscal non-viability of the ACT will become increasingly apparent over the coming decade (regardless of the outcome of the next few federal elections) and something will have to give.

It would be more realistic for Queanbeyan to annex Canberra. Queanbeyan was, after all, here long before Canberra.

I’m struggling to think of any historical situations where “we were here first” has seen off a rampaging enemy…

The argument over using services and or working across the border though does have a lot of merit. After all its the reason the kings highway does not get upgraded, because its mostly ACT drivers. Yet as shown both sides of the border use each other.

And the VST (Very Slow Train). And probably the Barton Highway too. If the federal politicians had to travel to Canberra by road or train, think how much better the transport links would be.

so, alternatively – close the Airport precinct for a few years.

Oh and Yass, too. Then we can get the Barton Hwy sorted out.

So the moral of the story is, if you’re thinking of moving from Canberra to Queanbeyan, to avoid the ACT’s (even) higher rates, taxes etc. – and to have plastic bags on tap – don’t get too close to the river.

I wouldn’t worry, when the river floods out (like in 2010) what gets submerged are roads, parks and the carpark under riverside plaza.

It’s extremely rare (and unlikely) for any houses to actually get water in them.

This thread is another excellent reason for dumping the concept of states.

I remember when Albury was used as a way for criminals to launder money through pokies, because Victoria had none. I think though in the ACTs situation the issues are of a greater scale, because it is lost revenue to the government.

I remember back in the early 1990s I had to send a letter to somebody in Oaks Estate and there was no postcode for Oaks Estate listed in the phone book. I addressed it “Oaks Estate via Queanbeyan NSW 2620”.

Cool story.

Nice to see that the ACT cares so little about Oaks Estate.

I’m not sure where you got that from, but here’s some facts: a large number of cars from the ACT travel INTO Queanbeyan every day, and many of them use the Oaks Estate Road.

But how many of those cars that go to Queanbeyan come back? Don’t most get stolen over there?

I’m taking my bat and ball and going home. Well played everyone.

grunge_hippy9:55 pm 18 Sep 13

to add to the pluses of NSW/QBN, I do a shop in QBN once every couple of months to get me some contraband plastic bags.

I enjoy being that close the to border! Viva NSW and their plastic bag carrying ways!

Carry on…. Rain, flooding right? how about that rain?

Oh, and please don’t “reap the benefits” of using roads we NSW folk pay for, to get to the coast, the snow or Sydney. (Cry some more river).

its not asif visitors spend money in those places.

It’s not as if the NSW people who work in Canberra don’t spend money there, either. I get half my groceries, and all my petrol, in Canberra for a start.

we can do this for hours.

How did a post about Oaks Estate become a NSW-bashing rant?

Surely the only rational response to a news item about the Oaks Estate bridge being closed would be: “unfortunately the two other exits from Oaks Estate remain open”.

But on the NSW-bashing – perhaps the ACT residents would like to ponder property prices in nearby NSW, which are making it impossible for people to live there unless they have a well-paid job in the ACT.

And yes, how about you stay off my Kings Highway, Macs Reef and Bungendore Roads, and stop using Bungendore and Braidwood side streets as rat runs.

So, it sucks to live in Qbyn and reap the benefits of working in the A.C.T.
Cry me a river. Oh, maybe that won’t help much in this situation.

It’s the national capital. Why shouldn’t people who live in NSW work here?

Well, the gridlock issue for one. Whilst our government is trying to form condensed housing and monorails to alleviate traffic congestion there are folks who decide to live outside the A.C.T in places like Queanbeyan, Yass, Cooma, Gunning etc who end up contributing to this problem. Folks in local areas struggle to get across our main arterial roads because everyone trying to get into Canberra chokes them up with cars, mainly because there isn’t any public transport to get them here.
Also, the income people make in the A.C.T gets spent outside Canberra in N.S.W businesses for everyday purchases and N.S.W government in rates, registrations and licenses. How many people living in Canberra work outside this capital city? I’d say there aren’t a great number. [statistic based on personal opinion]
The A.C.T economy isn’t as big as other states and when you take money outside the border, it takes away from the Canberrans. There aren’t enough jobs for local workers because the outsiders come here and do it for less, because their personal expenses aren’t nearly as much as in Canberra, what with their cheap rental markets and cheaper registration. This is similar to foreign workers coming to Australia and working here cheaply, taking Aussie jobs and taking the money home.[Analogy used may be flawed due to lack of knowledge on the subject and a prejudiced view].
In the meanwhile, enjoy listening to Canberra radio stations whilst you sit in your traffic jam on the border.
B.T.W. ,don’t take this too seriously, I’m just having fun because I’m bored out of my brain right now.

Since I am also bored and don’t want to be taken seriously I will respond.

I live in Braidwood and how about you Canberrans stop jamming my home town with traffic every weekend between October and May. Stop filling the bakery up and eating all the pies before I get there for lunch. Stop drinking all my beer at the Royal mail. Stop staying in the town and walking past my house and waving to me on the verandah and stopping for a chat and to look at the roses because it’s really annoying when I need to put down either my tea or my pipe to wave back.

For that matter how about you stay off the Kings Highway (except for the small ACT section at HQJOC. We pay for the repairs and damage you cause with your boats and your trailers and you don’t contribute at all.

Hey this is a fun game for two 🙂

Touche! Love it, this is my kind of game. I think you hit my destroyer…

The Queanbeyan river has minor flooding every few years, and the town is well sorted to deal with it. A bloody banksia bush falls over in ACT and everyone’s out whinging and blaming…

Morrisett low level bridge is also flooded so this morning, Qbn is gridlocked as all traffic is having to use the very inadequate Monaro St.
