Hi all,

Any tips on places around Canberra that are good for training for obstacle course races?

For example, parallel bars, extended monkeybars, hurdles and lots of stairs.

I’m training for the Mens Health Urbanathlon in Sydney in June and don’t know where to start.

Any tips much appreciated.

Great suggestions, all. Many thanks.

I seem to recall some obstacles like the one you’re after, near the bike path between where there’s now the museum by the lake, and the ANU, plus the uni grounds generally might have something to offer.

the path round the bays at yarralumla, south/west side of the lake, have fitness stops, or whatever they call them… i think the eastern side of ainslie oval has a few, too… ones i remember seeing.

There’s also one of these at John Knight Memorial Park on Lake G.

There used to be a fitness track around Woden Cemetery in the 1970s & ’80s with parallel bars, situps, chinups and everything else. I used to go there when I was at school because gyms back then had a strict “no under 18s” policy. I remember in Year 8 we asked our PE teacher if we could do muscle building and he told us he’d inquired and the answer from all the gyms was “no”.

A fitness track around a cemetery…Reminds me of this:

There is a great obstacle course over the pool at ADFA. Not sure it is publicly accessible, though…

There are a few around… In Deakin there is a fitness circuit up near where thesiger Ct meets Denison. You’d be able to do exercises then run down to the mint and back there.

There may be something in and around weston park too……

The grounds of parliament house have a pretty comprehensive circuit.

As does the western shore of the lake (between the yacht clubs)

for stairs run up Mt Ainslie. Most of it is bitumen tack, but there are stairs there as well.

For parallel bars etc there are a number of gym stations on the track around LBG. The trick is finding which ones suit your needs and going to them.

Alternatively make your own parallettes. For more urban like environments, wander around the parliamentary triangle around NGA, the library etc there are a number of features around there that you should be able to turn to your needs.

McCulloch Street in Curtin has recently become an obstacle course. Failing that, try a drive through the ANU.

Seriously, I don’t know where you’d find parallel bars, monkey bars, etc. but surely ‘lots of stairs’ shouldn’t be hard to access in any tall apartment or office building – or the Telstra Tower?
