This intersection is notorius. People turning right from David often forget to give way to cars coming through the intersection from the opposite direction. I’ve seen at least 3 accidents there and had an accident myself at this spot last year which luckily only damaged cars and not people. That accident was also on a Friday, people are rushing and not paying attention. For some reason, the visibility for people turning right from David into Macarthur is obscured until the last second and if you’re not aware of the danger and just follow the car ahead around the turn, you’ve a good chance of being in a collision. I now avoid the intersection as much as possible or proceed with extreme caution.

As someone who regularly crosses Macarthur Ave at this intersection, I’ve come close to being taken out by vehicles heading along Macarthur Ave towards Northbourne Ave, who fail to see the lights at the David St intersection and are instead focusing on the the lights on Northbourne. It’s not uncommon for a driver heading along Macarthur Ave to drive right through a red light at this intersection if the lights on Northbourne are still green.

I don’t have any suggestions as to how to fix this intersection, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was listed as one of the most dangerous in Canberra

Hope this guy recovers OK and quickly, and I hope they change the intersection to make it safer so no one else gets hurt.

Poor guy. He had no idea what hit him. Didn’t look like he got time to break between the collision and hitting the light.

I was quite impressed by how everybody reacted to this. The guys turning right beside the traffic light just stepped out and helped. My friend called 000 within seconds and got put through to the fireys because many others had beat him to the ambulance people. The fire fighters were already on their way at that stage.

1st ambo was really quick. With the fire tanker just behind. Lots of police and second ambo and fire was just a minute or two after that. They did an excellent job of getting everything under control and clearing traffic from the area.

I think they worked out the guy was stable pretty quickly because everybody slowed down and they carefully cut the car up around him. He was almost conscious at one stage and started to move the arm that we thought was caught in the seat/door. Guess in a sideways impact like that they are more worried about spine injuries.
