October has gone by so fast. Canberrans have been spoilt for choice this month with great dining options as part of Good Food Month and the Taste It Festival. Here are my foodie adventures for the month.

Brunch
I checked out 38 Espresso – the Kingston Foreshore’s only espresso bar for a coffee and croissant. They don’t do cooked foods and may be a popular coffee hang out in the near future.

I drove to Grandma’s Little Bakery, about 40mins away from Canberra for some baked eggs and bought some tasty muesli cookies.

Lunch
I’d been waiting on the opening of French patisserie Croissant D’or in Westfield Woden for weeks, and was excited to finally try them out for lunch and cake. They offer burgers, salads, sandwiches, smoothies and more, but I think I prefer their dessert menu.

I also decided to drive to Bread Nerds in Hume for lunch – amazing breads, bagels and one of the best meat pies I’ve ever had.

Dinner
As part of Canberra’s Good Food Month, I tried out Eightysix for Sunday lunch – I enjoyed the experience and the food there, and it was great to sample some dishes I wouldn’t have otherwise picked. I also dined at Pulp Kitchen for their special 5-course French degustation.

I had a pre-theatre dinner at Mr Wei’s near the Canberra Theatre. I wasn’t impressed with their entrees but the mains were quite tasty. Mr Wei’s advertises itself as selling authentic Beijing roast duck (aka Peking duck) so I’d be keen to try that out next time.

I tried some Vietnamese at Jimmy’s Saigon in Civic that offers decent food at decent prices and fast. I was in and out within half an hour.

I headed back to Morks for dinner – absolutely in love with the angel prawns, red duck curry and pork belly dishes! Can’t wait to try out another tasting menu from these guys. Hands down the best contemporary Thai in Canberra.

I had to try out the second Thai restaurant that recently opened up on the Kingston Foreshore – Chong Co Thai Bar and Restaurant, just a few doors down from Morks. Overall, I wasn’t impressed and thought it was overpriced for what we got.

I partook in eating a whole-suckling pig, roasted on a spit at Ox Eatery in Kingston. This was an impressive display on a large wooden plank with all the trimmings – corn on the cob, crunchy green beans, baked potato and crackling.

I caught up with a friend for an Indian dinner at Delhi 6 in Acton – the thali provides a sample of three of their curries with rice, naan and dessert.

I gladly tried out Sage’s new spring tasting menu. As always, the service is exemplary and I loved trying their dishes.

Sweet treats
I purchased the Opera Cake from Croissant D’or for a birthday morning tea – delicious layers of coffee soaked sponge, coffee buttercream and chocolate ganache. Mmm!

For my partner’s birthday, I ordered the Grand Marnier cake from Flute Bakery. This was an awesome looking cake with milk chocolate ribbon-like frills decorating the top, and consisting of white chocolate mousse, vanilla and chocolate sponge.

Until next month…thanks for reading!

+1 for Jimmy’s Saigon, the missus and I had lunch there last week and were suitably impressed.
The vietnamese pancake is sensational and great value for $15.

How about also adding some info on the noise level of places. After all most people who go to eat out do so to meet with friends and chat, which is very hard to do with loud noise (sorry, music).

And what about the general cleanliness of the place. I was at one cafe on a hill and the area to the toilet and walls, and indeed the floor around the front door were really grubby, included some broken glass. The counter area around the coffee machine was also grubby as well. Made me wonder what the kitchen was like. Food was tasty though.

Just stop it. If you cannot handle different choices in ambient music or a got ham dirty front door then just stay at home.

Did you not see the words: Made me wonder what the kitchen was like? Does it not occur to you this is why some people get sick. The cleanliness of the outside may reflect how clean the kitchen is.

In Europe most cafes and restaurants do not have loud music and talking is most pleasant, unlike here. If they do have music playing it is at an acceptable level. If I want to listen to music then I will go to a concert.

did croissant d’or in woden have the cronuts?

i’m off to the revamped satis in watson shops in the next few days – i’ve heard only excellent things about it, so expecting much.

Croissant D’or in Woden didn’t have cronuts…but I’ll keep a look out. I’ll have to check out the new Satis – looks great!

If the author of this series is not a tad chubby, there is no justice in the world. I put on about two kilos reading this post.

Thanks for your suggestions! I’ll try and incorporate noise levels and cleanliness in my posts 🙂
