Our esteemed local tome the Canberra Times is reporting here of plans for a monorail, that will deliver inter-town trips within five minutes.

“Aren’t you afraid the tracks will bend?”
“Not at all, my Hindu Friend”

There are also plans underfoot to sink roads around Civic and create land bridges, which I actually think has merit but I doubt that puppy wont fly.

And it’s all for a cheap $1.2 billion, which is being kicked in by a Singapore financier. the project itself was conceived by local planners, architects and engineers.

If only Homer could see us now.

I heard it was the biggest suburb in the southern hemisphere.

We can change Kambah to Vanstone; supposedly the biggest suburb in the country.

While we’re on it; Does anybody kow if that’s a fact? Have heard the rumour a number of times…

That would be one big suburb Bulldog …

F*ct if I know areaman; but nothing would surprise me.

How about Vanstone? I’d live there for sure.

I’m right in thinking that this has no ACT government backing, aren’t I?

and Howard…

I like these new suburbs much more based on Kerces’ post… So much so that I am now volunteering to live in Stanhope Estate, Foskey or Corbell Heights.

I’d like to live in Foskey..

Accomodation is rather cheap I hear for a prime suburb, great location..

Wow! Soon they’ll be building into NSW with all these new suburbs on the go..

They could put the “Foskey 5 Star Housing Commision Flats” in the new area. It could also have a permanent “All Full” sign out the front…

I remeber reading a letter to the paper S=some years ago in which the author said they wouldn’t mind living in a suburb named Howard on account of they only name suburbs after dead people. Same applies here?
K

Stanhope Chase ? preferably outta town ?

Stanhope Meadows …. like the ring of that.

Why don’t we just dig a big hole and piss away 1.2 billion dollars into it? Would be more fun, less environmentally damaging and easier to cover over and ignore when the developers piss off just like they did in the Simpsons. Hmm.. maybe Simple Simon needs to change his surname to Quimby?

Well someone’s got to go against the prevailing view.

I reckon it’s a great idea, as long as the ticket pricing structure is reasonable. The Sydney monorail was pretty gimmicky I’ll admit, because it didn’t really go anywhere, but this proposal could provide quick, quiet and efficient transport along Canberra’s main transport corridor and shouldn’t be scoffed at just because the Simpsons did an episode on the subject.

Action Buses might be a little concerned, however, about their main high volume routes being taken over.

Actualy, what Homer said was “It was built against the will of the immortal gods, and so it did not last for long”.

I’m not sure if he was refering to a monorail.

It’s Ogdenville, Brockway and North Haverbrook, not West.

Did somebody just say ‘Corbell Gardens’ ??

Or the local pub ‘The Jolly Junket’ ??

How about ‘You get to shit on stanhope any time you want to’ ?

or ‘It would beat living in the adjacent suburb – Corbell’..

Who the f*ck would live there? If I WON a house in Stanhope I’d kick my own ass.

But it would have to be called “Stanhope Heights”, “Stanhope Ridge” or even “Stanhope Estate”.

Marketing could have a great time trying to find a slogan for that one.

*shudders*

Correct… We called it a COTS scanner (transceiver) though..

Although I wouldn’t credit RASigs to have the gear to be able to do it, they’re still trying to get rid of the American Junk that Australia offloaded (conveniently – but not for Australia) from the Yanks at the end of Vietnam.

COTS = Commercial Off The Shelf (Dick Smith, Tandy)

The scary thing about your post bulldog was I was considering putting up a post regarding the next suburb in Canberra, ‘Stanhope’. (Rumour)

‘fucking excessive waste of money legislative assembly’ Has a nice ring to it Mael. Yes, I would settle for jetpacks as well.

Most disturbing in my eyes is the fact that there is an off-shore investor allegedly willing to tip the cash in to make it all happen.

Will we be selling our souls with the rights to the monorail? Would this would give carte blanche approval for redevelopment in areas we may not want to f*ck with?

Yeah and it will probably be a track guage that doesn’t actually fit the particular mode of transport the government purchases… or is it only defence that do that kind of thing??

I reckon our MLA’s ought wear Mickey Mouse ears whilst voting.

I’d also like to know what a ‘modest legislative assembly’ would look like compared to a ‘fucking excessive waste of money legislative assembly’

There be small print in that thar article..

arr.

I still desire in the bottom of my heart to one day ride a boat to work, but I’d settle for jetpacks.

10 bucks if we do go light rail, some freaking rocket scientist will propose and implement a different track guage to the rest of Australia.

the problem with monorail proposals (that appear out of nowhere like this one) is that they tar all mass transit alternative proposals as nutty.

the advantage that light rail has is that it is a worldwide industry, with standards that competitors adhere to. So choice of vehicle, track, support services become competitive – and offer alternatives while still being compatible with teh basic infrastructure in place.

mag-lev, monorail, civis busways – lock the ACT into proprietary systems.

I’m liking the Canals Thumper.

Certainly more realistic than a monorail. Didn’t we already do this (just a couple of times), or is monorail not classified as light rail?

F*cking Clown Shoes.

Big fan of the port idea…. maybe we could put a fake reef as well – then we could attract tourist dollars to offset the charges of the canal… maybe we could create another canal system all the way through canberra creating a venice like situation – which could attract the money to import freshwater mantaray on flying foxes… huh?..huh?

What’s next ?

Intelligent Carp with lasers attached to their foreheads ?

Regenerating LBG into a wonderful subaquatic lifestyle choice ?

(I’m still being haunted by the image of Ja-Ja Diane)

Is it April fools day?

Marge Vs. The Monorail
Monorail song
Lyle Lanley: Well, sir, there’s nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car Monorail! What’d I say?
Flanders: Monorail!
Lanley: What’s it called?
Patty & Selma: Monorail!
Lanley: That’s right! Monorail!
[crowd chants ‘Monorail’]

Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud…
Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud.
Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend?
Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend.

Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs?
Lanley: You’ll be given cushy jobs.
Abe: Were you sent here by the devil?
Lanley: No, good sir, I’m on the level.

Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can.
Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man.
I swear it’s Springfield’s only choice,
Throw up your hands and raise your voice!
All: Monorail!
Lanley: What’s it called?
All: Monorail!
Lanley: Once again…
All: Monorail!

Marge: But Main Street’s still all cracked and broken…
Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken!
All: Monorail! Monorail! Monorail!
[big finish] Monorail!
Homer: Mono… D’oh!

From doh’eth

Canals = way cool.

You should write up a proposal and send it to Minister Corbell. CC it to the Times and they’ll give you front page, so long as you have a pretty rendering.

this smells.

It was only a matter of time. Who cares about busways or light rail?! Monorail is the way of the future! (Or perhaps, the way of the late 80s.)

What a joke. When I saw this headline on the CT, I thought perhaps April 1 had come late this year.
