euro style number plates

Back on 9 May we broke the news that Euro style number plates were coming to Canberra which is a big deal if your car only has a space for a plate with that profile.

Today Simon Corbell has made the official announcement:

“The decision to roll-out these plates in the ACT follows several representations from members of the community who were concerned by the fact that conventional plates did not properly fit their chosen vehicle,” Mr Corbell said.

“This is an issue that the government was happy to consider and is now, pleasingly, in a position to provide these European styled plates to the community, that will match the European styled vehicles which are becoming more and more common on the road.

As reported here earlier they’ll be available in early July (our mail is 1 July) and because they gubbmint is sick of all your fussing they’ll come without holes in them so it will be a drill-you-own affair to suit your funny European car.

Will these be metal stamped? Or plastic?

That’s a good question. The fact they say they come without holes in them makes me think they might actually be plastic. But then the remake pricing is on par with metal slim line fees, both slightly cheaper than the remake fee for plastic plates.

Anyway, full pricing is available from here.

Briefly:
– $120.60 remake per set
– $400.00 for standard issue
– $475.60 for personalised
– $827.60 for personal/company names
– $2503.70 for “unique”
– $4668.80 for vehicle make

Will these be metal stamped? Or plastic?

The current plastic custom plates are awful.

Doesn’t even rate as a first world problem.

Oh my GOD people !! Why do you even care ? Its only a rego plate FFS.

I’ve gotta say thanks to you guys for your valuable contribution to this thread. Could you help me some more by posting a list of topics that we are allowed to discuss so that we don’t waste any more time talking about something that doesn’t interest YOU.

I think something has been overlooked here. When will a Nation know when to Celebrate? Or even where its Capital is? And how many people will be rear-ended by people trying to see why the ACT has ganja for its State Foliage?

what about Euro motorbikes, my plate doesn’t fit on my moto properly , I had to drill new holes as well.

Oh my GOD people !! Why do you even care ? Its only a rego plate FFS.

Ok, so what about shorter plates for US cars? Every American car has to bend the ends of plates to fit into the plate cavity, they look crap!

And whats the deal with personalised plates in the ACT, why so fkn expensive compared to the rest of Australia?

Simple, american cars will still look shite even with number plates that fit them properly.

It’s all just a big conspiracy to encourage you to catch buses….

FWIW I called Canberra Connect this morning for further information, as instructed at the bottom of the press release.

Specifically, I was asking for pricing and ordering info.

The further information I got was, “We don’t have that detail yet. Call back in about a month, we should know then.”

I think you’ll find that prices for things like number plates are announced at the time of the ACT Budget which will be in the first week of June.

Alternatively, they might be working out the exchange rate for the Euro….

Same deal for Japanese imported vehicles too. Aparently the answer is to make a “representation” to the Government and demand plates that will fit your vehicle.

Because in the ACT you are purchasing the plates outright. In NSW (for example) the initial payment is smaller, however an annual fee is charged to retain the plates.

And why are we still persisting with Y plates even though that national letter allocation arrangement fell apart decades ago?

Because the people who will get them have more dollars than sense.. like the following:

We’ll have to drill our own holes? But I thought RUS had strict rules that old plates had to be surrendered at Dickson then new plates immediately issued which had to be attached in the carpark before you could drive off. I sure hope they install a drill in the testing area in Challis St. Perhaps they could charge more for the drillings and bring in even more revenue.

The current plastic number plates can be pre ordered with no holes. You don’t have to take the car that the number plates are being transferred to. Most households these days have more than one car so you can always drive the other to RUS. Failing that you could purchase a set of number plate frames that have the plate slide into them and the frame is then fitted to the car. Given that there enough people outraged at the regular plates not being appropriate for their European car, then it’s no surprise that their next issue will be holes drilled in the plate that are of no use to them. A lot of the German cars have the 2 bolt holes right in the centre of the plate, however a Renault driver may not like 2 highly visible holes ruining the look of his oddly shaped car.

July 1 is a Sunday. July 2 may be more likely…
