Oils ain't oils?

I have an interstate buyer for my car who wanted an NRMA Inspection on it, so I duly booked it in the the NRMA agents in Lonsdale Street.

When I turned up they asked me if I was buying or selling. I thought this was an interesting question given that should make no difference to the inspection report but anyway, I told them.

The second point was when I came to collect it, I naturally asked is everything okay and they said “Yes fine, but it’s got some oil leaks though”. This obviously concerned me as I was not aware of any such occurrence. I then asked how come there are no leaks on my garage floor given the car has not been out of the garage for three weeks and they got a tad defensive. I also asked where the leak was originating from…they said they “didn’t know, because it’s hard to find them”. I found that response very inadequate.

To be frank I am very suspicious that “oil leaks” is a very good way or getting another booking from a customer. As soon as I got home I went straight to the garage to check the floor (paranoia was setting in) but there is absolutely no sign of oil there at all.

All in all, I can’t help but feel that the two page report with ticked boxes and a generic comment about seemingly a nonexistent condition to be a bloody waste of $220. The car is now back in the garage with paper under the engine bay and I bet there won’t be a drop on it tomorrow.

Hmm, you two should follow the Captain back to class.

Hmm, me thinks Hosinator just realised there were two “it’s” in Captains sentence, silly.

Back to the oil leak, I strongly recommend T1G3R’s suggestion of http://www.stateroads.com.au it is quite comprehensive.

The mechanic should provide more information, oil leaks can propogate internally, even into water jackets, etc. hence no oil spots on your garage floor, but I doubt the inspection would have been that thorough for $220. But you should have been informed either way.

Q: Are you female? I know it’s a generalisation, but mechanics are more likely to do the dodge on you.

Being NRMA, I’m sure there is some avenue of redress, just ask.

Why is that Hosinator?

I’m aware of the correct use of ‘it’s’ versus ‘its’ thank you. I was pointing out that if people are going to be pedantic, sentences usually start with a capital letter.

🙂

(Oh, and ‘oils’ should’ve been ‘oil’s’ in the good Captain’s post.)

Note: Skitt’s law means I’ve almost certainly made a spelling/grammatical error in this comment. Enjoy.

You took a car to a qualified mechanic who identified a problem and then with your basic knowledge you decided they were wrong because you couldn’t see any oil on your garage floor?

Can’t imagine why they got defensive.

What Keijidosha has written is spot on.

If the mechanic had written a note to say the oil weeping was minor, commonplace and no cause for concern, then both sides would have had an easier time of it. A little lateral thinking can go a long way.

I agree with the OP that the report of oil leaks would have raised eyebrows, as an oil leak is generally accepted to mean an event that will cause a sufficient amount of leakage to end up on the garage floor.

Oil weeps are pretty common, and yes they are hard to find. Give the engine a steam-clean and then have a look at it after a drive, see what you can see. An oil weep will usually not warrant fixing, the cost benefit just isn’t there.

Local mechanics do a good job of inspecting cars before sale or purchase.

I can recommended Craig Hall in Phillip. They’ve done 2 inspections for me and I definitely want to recommended them. Friendly and fast service.

What you might have is a ‘weep’ where the oil leak is very minor, and does nothing more than cause a film of oil on the outside of the motor. This film catches dust and grime, which in turn traps more oil as it leaks. So you don’t get oil dripping from the bottom.
In that case a high pressure clean and inspection a few days later will usually show the leak source.

To all those who want to use a pre-inspection service use Stateroads. It is a far superior pre vehicle inspection service. I don’t think any pre purchase inspection service will be easy on the seller but these guys are pretty honest and comprehensive.
