As we all know, Sammy’s Kitchen has moved over the road out of Garema Place Precinct and into the new Canberra Centre development – here’s a blow by blow comparison.

An Old Sammy’s Kitchen Laksa for comparison purposes is a straight 10/10/10

NSK Taste (Flavour) = 10
Size = 10
Ingredients = 10
Decor/Cutlery = 9
Waiting Staff = 10
Cost = 10

Details:

New Sammy’s Kitchen is still comparable with the Old SK version – nothing has really changed in the product stakes. It is notable to mention that all of the cafe’s in the new Canberra Centre development have a shared toilet facility, if you are not careful you’ll end up in the wrong shop on your way back. The decor of NSK is upmarket and hipper than the previous place, although it is at the expense of losing that old chinese restraunt charm it had. An easy comparison would be that they just copied the decor from next door (wagamama) rather than opting to keep the chinese feel.

Another notable change is I didn’t notice very many chinese in the shop this time – usually a good sign that a chinese restraunt is a good one is the percentage of chinese eating there. The dynamic of the store seems to have changed with the decor, and is going for the the more upmarket crowd.

I’ll most probably return to the restraunt, due more to nostalgia and prior knowledge than the new feel. I already know they do a great meal, but if I didn’t, I would probably steer clear of the place. Competition has moved up a notch in that area of Canberra recently, and it is yet to be determined who the winners and losers will be. I’m sure there’s a McDonalds franchisee waiting for somebody to move on from that area, and it will be a real loss if that happens.

Sammy’s Kitchen tends to be a taste-based explosion so powerful that it shatters your teeth, strips all of the flesh from your face, and explodes the windows from the building you are sitting in.

Such is the wonder of it.

Are my ratings confusing to you ?

By using a reference point, and having a comparable scale of reference from that point I would consider it pretty easy to interpret.

The inherent beauty of my scale is that you only have to try a Sammy’s Kitchen Laksa to know what I am comparing it to – or vice versa. I’m not saying in any way that Sammys Kithen is the ‘bloody good or you haven’t been out much’ you are making out.

A SK Laksa for comparison purposes is a straight 10/10/10

I have to say I havnt been the biggest laksa fan over the years but giving ratings like that either its bloody good or you havnt been out much. Although yes sammys is good quality for a reasonably priced fast service meal in the city.

I had the Combination Laksa on Saturday night. Truly incredible. I loved it.

Agreed, the new decor of “hip” doesn’t really do SK’s any favours for attracting passing traffic who’ve never had the food.
But the staff’s old attitude of “You book, we feed, you pay, get out!” on busy nights remains, so its entertaining at the very least.
