On Canberra Casino...

Has anyone been to Casino Canberra lately? I don’t really want to speak bad of the place but I can’t help but notice that it has gone downhill in the last few months. The last time I was in was March, we had a great time then but this time we just found it to be a downer. I guess for me what it was that the decor is really dated, having been in Sydney and going to Star City it is easy to see why the place is so unappealing to people.

I always found the people who were at the Casino (the workers I mean) to be a large part of what made the place a fun place to be but the other day when we were in I would have to say that none of them looked at all eager to be at work. At the bar it was hard to get someone to crack a smile and forget the tables they were equally unwelcoming.

I read in the paper that they are petitioning the government to get poker machines, perhaps it could be a great revenue raiser for them but in reality would we notice if the Casino weren’t there anymore? I mean what would set it apart from the local clubs aside from the obvious regular patrons. The response seems to dictate that the general public is against more poker machines in Canberra, I found it a bit disturbing that their spokesperson felt that there was no reason why there couldn’t be. In this day an age isn’t it obvious that poker machines are bankrupting our society?

It’s a little bit sad because I remember it for what it was back in the day when it was the place to be in Canberra but the place has seen better days. It’s a shame I like many others feel it could be more.

Also casino, I’d be carefull on how you use your stats. The report clearly shows the statement

Around 45% of the people through our doors are from overseas or interstate however a much larger proportion of our revenue comes from interstate players.

Is not supported by the report findings.

Firstly, your figure is inflated by over $5 million; secondly, it is disingenuous to use the figures when they are in ‘present value terms’ rather than the actual amount in a forum such as this – it gives a highly inflated figure.

But, to give you your credit, you have paid all the taxes you are required to pay by law. Kudos.

The figures were researched and compiled by accounting firm Ernst & Young and published in a 2005 report.

And where can I locate said report?

As an aside, if the report was published in 2005 it can’t show that the casino has contributed $240,000,000 to the ACT Government in the last 18 years.

I for one would not notice if it went the way of the ACT Liberal party and closed down

But 260 casino employees would. And without the millions of dollars the Casino contributes to the ACT Government (Ernst & Young put it at around $240,000,000 over the last 18 years) your rates would probably go up.

E&Y also estimate that our contribution to the ACT economy has been up to around $350,000,000.

If the Casino closed down I think you WOULD notice.

Do you have evidence of this average 13.3 million dollar per annum ‘contribution’ to the ACT Government?

I do wonder if there is some kind of break down available for where the Canberra Casino’s income actually comes from?

Of course any large business closing will hit the ACT economy.

I do wonder if there is some kind of break down available for where the Canberra Casino’s income actually comes from? I imagine that the majority is from gambling in one form or another, but how much comes from locals, and how much from interstate and international guests?

Because I can’t help but think that money coming from the ACT population then benefiting the population is a bit like asking your work colleagues for donations so they can come to a free christmas party…

On the other hand, if we are fleecing foreigners… carry on.

Another vote for the quality of dress.

I would like there to be minimum standard of three piece diner suit and polished shoes. All drinks to be served in martini glasses, regardless of what they are.

Or at least ban t-shirts.

It’s as if, on a Saturday night, the flouro hi vis (whatever the current name for them is) vest has been replaced by the brand depot tshirt.

Stop – COUGARTIME

Sadly, all too often a cougar hunt turns sour and develops into a lonely whaling expedition.

That’s because none of the cougars want to go home with you…

What’s the difference between a dog and a fox? 8 beers…

Thumper at #7 you are spot on. Until they ban tshirts, shorts and trainers, the casino will remain a dive.

Like captain Ahad?

No, Ahab was looking for a white whale 🙂

Until the casino brings in a decent dress code it will always be scummy.

When the Casino first opened men had to wear pants, not jeans, a collared shirt and leather shoes or they wouldn’t let you in. They gradually relaxed the restrictions as they weren’t getting enough patrons. Now anything goes!

As a former employee of Casino Canberra, that place is a dump. They treat staff poorly and I can understand why they wouldn’t be smiling.

The head honcho’s would rather spend $10 million a year fighting a losing battle to have pokies than give staff a payrise, provided better meals to staff, or renovate the premises.

They provide meals to staff??

Well your not allowed to leave the premises during your shift. They kinda provide meals to staff. Stale bread and sandwich fillings, pies and sausage rolls, 2 minute noodle and cereal packets and some frozen meals. (which took 10-15mins to cook and you get 20min breaks) You could also order and pay for snacks from the bar. But it was the same thing EVERY day. Places like Star City and Crown put on a buffet for staff. Saturday nights were the worst… more staff on than any other time, the kitchen hand was usually off sick or never bothered to show up and there would be NO FOOD !

If you took in your own food, and it needed to be stored in the fridge. Good luck ! Someone would eat it before your first break. There were always nasty/funny messages on the whiteboard of “whoever ate x food your an ass” then underneath “but it was soo yummy, bring it again”. The big bosses didn’t care – their answers were always thats why you have lockers.

If the Casino shut down, then Galaxy Nightclub would presumably also shut down.

Simple Jethro, just log back into your adult friend finder account… Im sure there is someone on there to your liking.. :0)

You want staff to look at you and smile while you lose all your money? I can see how that would piss some people off…

Since I’ve been here – 6 years – it’s always looked like a poorly-maintained comobo of crappy Leagues club and the TAB where all the old farts with cigs dangling out of their mouths hang out. Never bothered spending actual time there gambling, but the food and service is also shite in the bistro.

So, I’m actually surprised to hear it was actually decent enough at one stage. I don’t think Canberra is ready for something like Star City, but even if it was at the standard of a Labor Club – clean, reasonable food and decent staff – it’d be an improvement.
