I guess this is mainly for the lurkers… some new, short contemporary dance by young choreographers.

Ex-Canberrans show their stuff, plus some others.

On Course is a one-hour performance of seven new short works by young choreographers from tertiary dance courses around Australia.

Several are originally from Canberra: they got their grounding in dance with QL2 Centre for Youth Dance’s “Quantum Leap” ensemble.

Jamie Winbank, Emily Chapman, Caitlin McKenzie, Gemma Dawkins, Jacqui Cornforth, Ella-Rose Trew and Amanda Phillips are working with dancers Abby Johnson, Gabriel Comerford, Gabrielle Kirchner, Lucy Ingham, Luke Curry Richardson, Paul Jackson, Pia Moore, Rene Miller and Jake Kuzma.

On Course grew out of QL2’s Hot To Trot program, where senior Quantum Leap dancers create short works — which a few of you would have seen last weekend here.

We decided to open it up to Quantum Leapers who had left Canberra to study, and wanted to ‘come home’ to show what they were doing. And now, dancers around Australia who have heard about it from Quantum Leapers are wanting to be part of it, so we’ve created “On Course” for them.

There’s a snippet of the very beginnings of Jamie Winbank’s piece on Youtube here.Jamie says “the working title is Hide and Seek. ‘The piece explores the hidden secrets behind finding the search for meaning, particularly in dance. It relates to the honesty behind society, from innocent secrets, chinese whispers to world wide calamities (in effect).” The dancers are Pia, Emily, Rene, Amanda, Paul, Ella and Gabi. ‘Its very early days – come and see the final piece!”

The works will be presented in a short performance season – three shows only – over this weekend, 13 and 14 December.
