disabled parking

The Office of Regulatory Services has been moved to publish a fact sheet on how disability parking should work.

In the ACT, specific parking spaces are provided for people with mobility disabilities who hold a current Australian Disability Parking Permit. These spaces are located adjacent to shops and offices and are designed to provide extra room around the vehicle for easier access to and from the vehicle, particularly for wheelchair and walking aid access.

Each disabled parking bay can be identified by a white symbol of access, and consists of a dedicated non-shared space with a shared area on one side of the dedicated space – see diagram overleaf.

The area between the designated disabled parking bay is defined in the Australian Standard AS2890:6 as a shared area for use by vehicle users displaying a current Disability Parking Permit.

Therefore, it is not considered an offence for permit holders to encroach on the shared area.

However, the shared area is not designed as a separate parking bay for an additional vehicle which also displays a current Disability Parking Permit.

It is an offence to park in a disabled parking bay if a vehicle does not display a current Disability Parking Permit.
