On Hipsters. And why some of you need to go take a look at yourselves

Why It’s Time to Stop Calling Everything a ‘Hipster’ — powered by Cracked.com

The word hipster gets overused on this site as much as anywhere.

Often by angry people who think their own ignorance is a justification of their opinions.

In any event Cracked have done an excellent job explaining the term’s misuse which I thought worthy of sharing with you all.

(Mild language warning)

So basically hipsters are the opposite end of the spectrum to a Bogan.

Got it.

yet both of them describe affectations in dress and behaviour that sends other tribes into paroxysms of rage, how peculiar

While they are at other ends, the spectrum is actually more like a horseshoe, so they are very close together, but separated by a gap which will never be bridged.

Best analogy of the day

Seconded.

Yep thats what I was thinking, so different, yet so similar.

I have a mate who refers to anyone who wears chino’s or has an SS haircut as a hipster. The term hipster seems to have completely lost all meaning.

What does SS mean in this context?

When did Flannies and mustaches move from the Bogan column to the Hipster column?

Kambah looks a lot more ironic that it did this morning.

Since when did wearing a falnnie become Bogan?

I wear them to keep warm. I think Bogan is used far too often too.

You just don’t like being seen for what you are

Says the hipster….

And proud of it!

No true hipster would allow themselves to be defined.

To quote Urban Dictionary:

Hipster’s [sic] can’t be defined because then they’d fit in a category, and thus be too mainstream.

Are you trying to define me?

Well I guess this somes up the spirit of this thread:

Flannies are the traditional hallmark of Westies, along with ug boots, durries, and mullets.

Over the years commentators with a poor grasp have melded the two.

Bogans wear anything from oakleys, thongs and singlets through to hi-vis, suits, polo shirts, and Australian flags.

Bogans vs hipsters. I’m picturing it as a hilarious break dance battle.

Generally I like the bogan laid-back attitude and the hipster open mindedness. But I guess we all have a bit of bogan and a bit of hipster in us, right?

So have the hipsters – if they ever had any.

My guess is that you think anyone who dresses a bit alternative or has a trendy hair cut is a hipster. That seems to be the generalization on the RA anyway.

Flannos were replaced by hoodies as Bogan uniform essentials some years ago.

I think the distinction to make there KB is that while all the above uses of said “bogan” clothing make perfect sense, thinking that said clothing is acceptable social wear all day, every day and anywhere is where a person crosses the line from worker wearking practical clothing too “bogan”

poptop said :

“A pronounced lack of dress sense in social situations. Typical bogan attire consists of a flannelette shirt, King Gee stubbie shorts (either blue/khaki), torn or soiled jeans from the 1980’s or earlier, and of course double-plug standard issue white thong sandals with black rubber.”

So, while I having a family weekend away campiing in winter, standing around the campfire with a few people having a tipple whearing a flannie to keep me warm I am a bogan?

What about working in the yard in the middle of winter & someone comes for a cuppa or we are having a beer at the end of the day? They are all social situations, can I wear them then?

On the subject of stubbies shorts (I dont think you can get them any more) they are the most comfortable shorts to do any work in during summer, especially if you are crouching down a lot as they dont get caught on your legs & keep you cooler.

OK they dont look all that attractive but when you are swingning off a shovel, building a fence or landscaping, does it really matter if you look good?

As I said, the word bogan gets bantied around way too much 😉 (usually by sobbish people who have never actually done a day of manual work in their lives…..)

Apparently words can change meaning if used incorrectly and often. See “misogynist”.

yep…ironic flannies, moustaches and thick rimmed glasses that serve no purpose other than to make the wearer look intelligent

hipsters are taking over canberra! all these damn cafes that are essentially an excuse for bad service, crap food and zero spend on decor are popping up everywhere

do hipsters realise how hysterically funny they look?

maybe i’m just “too mainstream” to get their sensitive souls

KB1971 said :

Ever since every Kambah booner wore them with tight black jeans, desert boots and a pack of Winnie Reds tucked up in the sleeve! Ahh, the ’80s, why did you leave us?

Bogan.com.au says so.

I thought a hipster was a term for a style of pants.

Brilliant video. Couldn’t agree more.

I remember a little while back, I was reading some posts on here objecting to frangipani & my family stickers. Then a poster chimes in with, “well if those stickers annoy hipsters, than I might invest in some” etc…

I have a mate who refers to anyone who wears chino’s or has an SS haircut as a hipster. The term hipster seems to have completely lost all meaning.

What are your thoughts, barcham?

HiddenDragon10:30 pm 30 Apr 13

Amazed and confused by this.

Amazed, because I had no recollection of Seinfeld dealing with hipsters (so cutting edge) – although I do recall some wise words on salsa.

Confused, because he talks about hipster thongs, and I felt sure that hipster (boys, anyway) tended to wear baggy boxers, with the waistband and a few more inches showing.

All very enlightening (as always).

Hipsters – don’t they like Game of Thrones, or something like that????

only hipsters would find that useful…
