One cyclist almost takes out another

I thought of the Riot when I saw this happen in front of me on the weekend on Northbourne.

What other readership/viewership could appreciate the multiple themes of red light running, cyclists and almost carnage?

Clip taken with the Aldi dash cam.

Comparing it with other clips I think my next dash cam won’t be a fisheye.

Who’s singling them out? Cyclists break road rules. So do pedestrians and motorists. And most of the time no-one gets hurts (or booked).

So you have not read this thread? Or the other countless threads on the subject. Happens all the time but aparrently cyclists are the antichrist despite the road accident/death statistics saying otherwise.

You know there are a lot of good things cyclists and cycle groups do fo the community.

It’s much like the threads about motorists speeding, and other bad behaviour on the roads.

I saw two lycra clad thousand dollar plus bike cyclists bail on the car lane and cross in the pedestrian crossing almost hitting pedestrians this morning. I then saw another weaving through people on the footpath outside the ACTEW building as fast as he could. Really not hard to find examples.

Two is not a significant number and I doubt any proper cyclist would begrudge a pedestrian laying the shoulder into any such cyclist. Also, if the either of the cyclists you observed was riding a fixed gear bike that doesn’t have brakes, then it’s actually your duty to knock them off, especially if that fixie is a carbon fibre jobbie.

So a guy without a helmet (it’s hanging on the handle bars) on what looks suspiciously like a BMX who then doesn’t continue on into the cycle lane on Northbourne, at lunch time, is held up as an example of a “cyclist” doing the wrong thing. He’s the equivalent of a “P-plate tradie”. He’s a dick plain and simple.

Go out and observe the real cyclists going up and down Northbourne during commute hours and find me a significant number of transgressions and then we’ll talk.

While this is a clear case of a cyclist going through a red light and I in no way endorse such behaviour, but that’s the first instance (albeit via video) I’ve seen of a cyclist going through a red light in the last 5+years of driving. People often accuse cyclists of this, but from all the driving/riding I’ve done, motorists are guilty of red light law breaking more often by an order of magnitude. It’s so common red light cameras need to be installed and even then they still get offenders.

I often use the Glenora Drive intersection and the number of times I’ve had to stop for a red light running car or truck is frightening.

I see cyclists run reds (or use pedestrian signals) on a regular basis.

I see pedestrian walking agianst red lights all the time. I had a P plater tailgate me on the way to work this morning, I had numerous people pass me while I was doing the speed limit this morning while driving.

I am sick to death of people singinling cyclists out as if they are the only one to break the road rules.

There’s nothing funnier than seeing or is that hearing a singin-a-ling cyclist 🙂

How about a lycra-wearing, singin-a-ling cyclist being dive-bombed by a p!ssed off magpie? It is nearly that time of year again …

So a guy riding a bike isn’t a real cyclist and that makes it OK?
Right…

No, you genius. I said he was a dick. It just invalidates any claim toward “all cyclists should bla bla bla…”. This is one guy who clearly isn’t representative of the general “cyclist” population.

You don’t seem to understand that people use this type of person’s behaviour to justify targeting other cyclists. And by targeting, I mean deliberately endangering.

And what I am (obviously saying) is that a dick is a dick, just because he’s on a BMX doesn’t make him a dick.

This morning I saw a cyclist run the car red in the car lane following the green man coming from Lonsdale into the city. Pick being a bloody pedestrian or a vehicle, and if you’re a pedestrian get off and walk the crossing!

I do that all the time, it’s great.

No danger or obstruction, because the green man is flashing so all the lights are red. I get through the intersection and once the light does turn green, the traffic flow is faster for my absence.

Everybody wins.

And where would you place the rego numbers on the bike, and how large do you realistically expect them to be, .

That’s an easy one. The rego number would be printed in large lettering on the RTA supplied hi-vis vest that must be worn at all times when on the road. An optional Hi-vis backpack cover with the same number printed would also be available.

And maybe a yellow star as well

I’ve commented on this exact situation many times – it’s my absolute pet hate as a cyclist…

Hi-vis is to be encouraged, but I can’t see that idea happening: the system will need diverted resources to enforce it to start with (people already complain about the lack of police presence on roads focussing on the far more destructive issue of drivers), and if you wanted to make it easy to flog or swap someone’s rego in a change room, you’re onto a good thing.

All you’ve got is a rego number, physically disconnected from the bicycle. You have no way of knowing if the person riding the bicycle is the legitimate holder of the rego number.

.

It happens more often than you think. Understandably most don’t see cyclists running red lights due to the fact they spend the majority of daylight hours in an office and also there are relatively few cyclists on the road. Having said that, from my experience, most cyclists are generally sensible.

Wow ! This actually makes sense and is a logical answer. My bus almost took out a cyclist the other night, but sorry if you’re riding along dressed in black with no flashy light after the sun goes down, don’t blame the bus.

But I’m curious as to how rego numbers would be effectively implemented.

It’s just more satisfying to rant about someone when you can identify them by a number (that could conceivably be translated to a name and address) rather than be completely unidentifiable.

If I had to pay rego tomorrow for a bike I wouldn’t be overly fussed.

But I’m curious as to how rego numbers would be effectively implemented. Rego plates do little to deter some drivers from doing dumb things with major consequences so don’t count on rego plates from deterring some cyclists from doing dumb things with less destructive consequences.

And where would you place the rego numbers on the bike, and how large do you realistically expect them to be, and what’s the likelihood of anyone recording accurate details off a moving bicycle?

Not to mention mocking up or switching rego numbers will probably be much easier. ACT Police already have a problem with cars driving around with stolen plates. Most people, including cops, would not be able to tell you what the make and model of a bicycle is from 2 meters behind, or side on for that matter.

And this is why we need bicycle licensing, because people on bikes could injure others on bikes.

All the time you have groups like pedal power insisting that cyclists are above the law you are going to get this. I wonder what pedal power’s official response would be should idiot cyclist have taken out and even injured law abiding cyclist?

Oh fark me please, Pedal Power DO NOT insist cyclists are above the law. Quite the opposite, they expect people who are on bikes to obey the road rules, pretty well every publication they put out says so. Fair dinkum…….

I do agree riders should be insured (I am) in case they cause an accident. & again, what will rego prove? Like there isnt any registered vehicles running red lights every day.

Why do they need an extra licence if they already have a car licence? (Like 99.99999999% of the population).

Yep, he is a dick, he should be fined for running a red light just like everbody else but unless there is a copper on every corner you are not going to get that.

Terribly inconvenient having to stop at a red light besides Russian roulette is far more exciting!

And this is why we need bicycle licensing, because people on bikes could injure others on bikes.

Stupid, stupid. Won’t be a problem on the roads for long if he continues to ride like that.

If cycles had rego plates…
