One dying industry laments the demise of another?

The Canberra Times is casting an eye over the decline of the Canberra X-rated industry as fanciers of such material find it easier, and considerably less embarrassing to consume the vast sea of free material available on the internet.

[Robbie Swan] says the industry used to turn over $34million a year in ACT wholesale retail sales. It now scrapes about $2million.

The astonishing thing is anyone’s still spending $2 million considering how much free stuff is out there.

Which isn’t to say the sex industry is doomed. One imagines hands on retail has some appeal for the gadgets and gizmos.

When oh when will this illegal Labor Government stop the lies!!!???? Admit they have no solutions to this very real problem thats affects ordinary Australians. They are pandering to their Green masters who deplore the impact on the environment from the manufacture of these ordinary household items. I call on the Government to call an election now on this issue

You probably should have put some unrealistically outrageous references to the original article in there – it seems a lot of people thought you were being serious.

… good rant though!

Good point. I thought the when oh when would give it away but it seems not. New at being a nutjob. Ill get the hang of it. My inspiration is justground but its hard to copy a master.

What? You mean you can get porn for free on the internet now? Why didn’t somebody tell me?

Perhaps the porn industry will have to pull out earlier than they expected.

Government bailout? It seems to work for the automobile industry

Much like the music industry, the porn retail industry has shot itself in the foot by charging silly $$ for product of uncertain quality. No sympathy here.

They won’t disappear entirely, but they’ll never bounce back either.
(hmmm … gotta be at least one entendre there :-/

Well, actually an election was (partly) fought on the issue in the past. In 1993 the Liberals pledged to tighten censorship laws and ban X-rated videos in those pre-Net days. The porn industry sent letters to everybody on their mailing lists urging them to vote Labor to keep X-rated videos legally available. Despite the Keating Labor government being diabolically unpopular they scraped back into office by the barest of margins. A few seats in Qld – the largest consumers of X-rated videos by mail from Canberra – saved the government.

You sound like some sort of commie.

I used to say that money coming into the ACT only came in for one of three reasons – taxes, porn or fireworks. Fireworks, at least the legal kind, are gone and porn seems to be going.

Thus proving again that the only sure things in life are death and taxes.

At least we’ve still got Summernats.

Since when has the availability of free porn been a problem?

Obviously you care nothing about the local industry and keeping jobs in Canberra! This will probably push house prices up too making a 4 bedroom, ensuite double garage property almost unobtainable on a HECS loan. How can I budget for my car rego without access to lacally based porn products of dubious quality??

You are on fire today!

retail sales would include things you could not get for free on the internet, eg *erm* marital aids…
