I missed this report in the Canberra Times on Sunday and Monday.

“Widely loved and respected in Canberra, where she was born more than 99 years ago, Heather Shakespeare died early yesterday morning.”

I came into contact with Heather Shakespeare through her support of Scouting (as did many in the ACT) and I know that she will be missed by all.

i do hope that at some stage she was interviewed by the national Library for the taped memoir series, the stories of her life would be amazing.

In fact the NLA did interview her, as I discovered when googling her name earlier today.

That’s quite an incredible life she’s lived if it was all in Canberra. Imagine the stories she could have told, the things she would have seen, the people she met.

Back to Mrs Shakespeare…

She was such a delightful woman and will be so sadly missed.

There’s nothing to be ‘sick of hearing’ here – anyone so lovely and integral to the history of Canberra deserves all the fanfare possible.

Apparently that isn’t quite the case, if you believe WIN News. See the other thread.

Is someone suggesting a scholarship in this case? Will Heather get the half-mast treatment?
I’m sorry Tyler, but the parallels are…. well, not parallel.

I think we need to get past the half mast comment – that was for the police remembrance day, not peter leonard.

Comparing this post to the reaction we’re addressing in the Peter Leonard thread is not only ridiculous, but isn’t exactly respectful of p1’s post, not to mention the death of Mrs Shakespeare.

Point taken, and I’ll take my own advice to honorably admit poor judgment…

Good question. There was an Elsie Hudson who was turning 105 in 2004. If she’s still kicking around I daresay she’d qualify.

What was most interesting about Heather Shakespeare is that she was born in Canberra and lived in Canberra for what seems to be most of (if not all of) her life.

To be honest, I don’t envy her.

But it’s good to see someone lead a long, healthy (I assume) life.

I, for one, am sick of hearing about Shakespeare.

On a serious note…99 is pretty damn good. Bummer she didn’t make it to 100. Does anyone know how old the oldest person in Canberra is?

105 at Page nursing home.

Totally stuffed the quote tag. I think it’s clear where the quote ends and my post starts, tho.

Okay, here we go all over again with the Peter Leonard thing!

Go on JB, Loquaciousness & Cameron – I’ll let you guys have the first shot at this one after reading your recent comments on “Has the Peter Leonard thing, perhaps, been slightly over done?”

I anticipate silence and a few quiet coughs from the back seats.[/quoute]

A respectful post on RA noting the death of such a long-lived Canberran is more than appropriate here tylersmayhem.

Maybe we don’t think this one has been overdone?
