One year on, what do we think of the Kingston Library?

The Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) is celebrating the first birthday of the new “shopfront” Kingston Library.

“Visitors can come along and celebrate this important occasion at the Kingston Library today,” Ms Little [Director of Library and Information Services] said. “Birthday cake will be served on arrival and attendees will have opportunities to win prizes such as books, badges, and bookmarks.

“Kingston Library has had a successful year with over 73,000 visitors and over 150,000 library items loaned, we?re looking forward to an even more successful 2011.”

Ms Little said Kingston Library had achieved an award for innovative design at the 2010 ACT Architecture Awards receiving a commendation award for interior architecture

But what do users think? And should the Library service be in TAMS or part of education?

Tis good for dropping in from work etc.

Tis useless for trying to go with kids/prams etc.

I think it would have been a good addition to the library system. As a substitute for the griffith library (ample free parking, plenty of space for a kiddie area) it is useless.

The best public resource in Kingston.

Of course there are so many.

What is this “Library” thing you speak of? I thought library was now spelt I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T.

The problem I have with the library is that it does not seem to have many book. That was one of the good things about the old location as there was plenty of books and book space. Another problem with it is that there is not much room for personal space, you are forever getting out of somebody else’s way which is annoying.

Location is great and it is a good library – huges amount of stuff given its tiny size. And near the best pie shop in Canberra. WINNER!

I tend to believe that TAMS are better at customer-facing service delivery than the Education Department.

It’s an absolutely fantastic library service. It is accessible geographically, has great children’s books as well as adult reading material. The librarians are personable and helpful. The best public resource in Kingston.

I seem to recall the air-conditioner broke down, making it uncomfortable (for the librarians, in particular) – I hope the department which looks after it has the budget to deal with these sorts of breakdowns quickly. Other than that, provided it continues being run as well as it is today, I can’t see what it matters which department the Library service is part of.

My parnter’s mother likes to bemoan the ‘scan and load in the shute one at a time’ system – she think the library staff implemented it because they’re lazy and want other people to do their work. She cannot understand why anyone would want to return a book out of hours.

Funny old duck.
