Only 4,000 local jobs to go says Zed

The ABC has reassuring noises from Zed Seselja over not needing to fear an Abbott Government because the job losses will only be 4,000 rather than 12,000:

Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has pledged to cut 12,000 jobs from the Commonwealth public service if he wins government in September.

But Mr Seselja has told a Legislative Assembly committee only a third of those jobs would be cut in Canberra.

“I think we need to be clear, I don’t think anyone would argue that any jobs losses in Canberra is a good thing, but I don’t think we should overstate what those are either,” he said.

“When you talk about 12,000 by natural attrition you know that that’s across the entire public sector around the nation.

“So I think it’s important isn’t it, if you want to breed confidence, that at least accuracy is important.”

It’s already being watered down, and I’d expect it to be watered down some more. The PS has already had cuts over the past few years, it’s not the easy target it was last time.

Can’t help but feeling that figure ignores the usual promises about protecting frontline services, which surely means that more than one third of the cuts would be in Canberra. I also assume the figure might change in light of future Budget estimates and then there’s the Coalition’s promised post-election Commission of Audit.

This is after agencies have had the once (or in my department’s case – twice) over with the redundancy broom …? Not sure how many staff itching for a hand-out are still lurking around, certainly not anything that would make an impact on 4000.
