[ED] Just a reminder that the Opals play the second of their Canberra games tonight at the AIS Arena against the New Zealand Tall Ferns.

Andrew Barr has let us know that Canberra’s love affair with women’s basketball is set to continue with the Australian Opals set to light up the AIS Arena boards in both August and September:

The Opals will take on China at the AIS Arena on 11 August and then New Zealand on 2 September.

“The Opals have had some fantastic achievements recently so this will be a great opportunity for the people of Canberra to see one of Australia’s most successful national sporting teams,” Mr Barr said.

“Not only does this provide a great opportunity for the basketball loving public of Canberra to support some of the best female players in the world, it will also be a very positive promotion for women’s basketball and attract visitors to our city.

If only other codes saw fit to give us fixtures of similar quality.

Yay! About time we divert some of the football money to this sport. It’s great to watch and we don’t have to deal with some kind of scandal involving thugs every other week.

i went to the last international women’s basketball games we had in canberra at the AIS back in 2006 – and the opals beat the US women’s team for only the 7th time ever – it was bloody brilliant!!!! the other game was china from memory. the games drew a great crowd.

some fervent googling has uncovered….

Other codes would be nice, but the reality is we’ll only get international fixtures like this when we can get attendance figures in the same ballpark as the ‘major’ cities. Sadly most of time we have neither the interest nor the venues to meet the targets in both those examples.

However, this is one of those times and here’s hoping the Opals pull some good crowds 🙂
