Opals down China at the AIS

Last night the Opals (Australian women’s basketball team for those not in the know) defeated the national Chinese team 77-65 at the AIS arena.

The Opals led the entire game (from memory – China might have scored the first basket, I was chatting at the time) so it was a pretty comfortable win. China came close a couple of times within a basket but then the lead would quickly spin back out again.

The Opals squad noticably lacking the really big names although it was good to see the younger players like Nat Hurst, Jess Foley, Hollie Grima etc get a run and still achieve a win. Rohanee Cox (WNBL MVP for last season) had a great game, scoring 14.

The crowd numbers could have been better – not sure what the exact attendance was but I would say the AIS was only about 1/4 full?

Come along for the next AIS game against NZ on September 2 if you can – it’s worth the $16 ticket price.

In fact someone was telling me (so hearsay) that Basketball Canberra even ran some deal where groups of 6+ (something like that) got $10 tickets – but that they ran the promotion too late for anyone keen to attend to get the benefit (typical).

Suggestion to Basketball Canberra: how about promoting the deal a bit better for the next game to get not only reward loyal supporters but also get more people along for a great crowd?

I’ve seen no promotion of this match, these matches in fact, at the Belconnen and Tuggeranong basketball stadiums.

There may be a little interst amonst those that go there, to be exploited by basketball Canberra, do you think?

we got the email promoting it because we have been season ticket holders in the past but for god’s sake how about some mainstream promotion of the event to let people know about it who aren’t constantly involved in basketball but may well be interested in coming!?

i love that basketball canberra are running a survey where you get a 2 for 1 ticket voucher for completing it – and also a $10 pp promotion and they make it sound like you can combine the 2 offers but you can only order up to 5 tickets…. um 5 cannot be divided by 2?

Australian Opals v New Zealand – World Championship Qualifier game – to be played at the AIS Arena on the 2 September, commencing at 7.00pm.

Where is the bloody promotion for these matches?

We got an e-mail as our kid plays basketball, but where is the advertising?

We were there. Good not great match, let down VERY badly by the lack of promotion of it, hence the minimal crowd.

If we hadn’t picked up a leaflet at Belconnen basketball stadium, one which was lying around on a table, we wouldn’t have known about it. And our kid plays basketball.

Someone needs to extract their thumb!!!

Woo HU!!!!

Not so big now China eh?
