Are you guys kidding ?? Any legal cod will be in my frying pan that evening.

I was up the Darling River in April & fisheries were tagging lots of big breeders over 30 Kgs & at the Menindie lakes we caught heaps of juvenile cod & perch in our yabbie traps.

I fully agree that no river cod should be taken, they are an icon that has not enjoyed the protection they deserve. But there are many others, blackfish, trout cod, mountain galaxia, macquarie perch etc.

I would be more than happy to see some upland rivers designated to native fish and an unending season on trout declared in them.

The reality is though, that the trout related business generates much more money in the region, and as we are, or should be, realists, that fact will see the protection and controls currently in place remain that way.

I do enjoy catching trout but I also don’t want to see the extinction of our natives, tough balance.

Personally, I think that any introduced species of fish should be allowed to be killed onsite, just like feral pigs. Any native fish should be protected from any harm at all, just like platypuses.

No murray cod should be taken from our rivers, they are part of an ever decreasing pool of wild genes.
If you want to eat a cod, get one from a stocked impoundment.

Most fisho’s I know wouldn’t take a cod over 80cm(if they took one at all)
