Zdnet has released a study done by Waugh Partners of Sydney, stating that many OSS* users are;

“26 years old and spend their days being bored in Canberra”

Go the pub, you turbo nerding cretins.

[Ed. It also points out that free software enthusiasts have more sex and earn more money than you might expect.

“It also points out that free software enthusiasts have more sex and earn more money than you might expect” – since I would expect no sex and probably $50K pa I guess its not really that hard to beat those expectations…

Some of us left 26 a few years back. But in my defence, I have spent the last 4 years in a pub.

Where I once witnessed an optimistic open-source pickup line! Come with me if you dare…

The scene is near closing at All Bar, and my mate NATHAN XXXXXXX introduces himself to a not-interested-even-if-you-were-sober pretty young thing queuing at the bar. Says he works as a de-veloper, not a de-viant. And to prove his credentials, loudly declares that the GNU public licence stands for ‘Get Nate Up ya’.

She didn’t get it.

Neither did he.

This is not totally accurate. Canberran “nerds” spend all their day fixing inane problems and spend their own time going out and generally getting away from computers. At least I do. But I’m not an OSS user. The only free piece of software I can think of on my PC is DOSbox. I never dreamed I would one day be running a DOS emulator to play the games I grew up with.

Would be interesting to see how they conducted their survey. Waugh Partners have a lot of Canberra associations, so that may have somewhat skewed the participation in their survey of “self-identified members of the open source community”.

Also, working on Microsoft crud all day in the public service might be enough inspiration to only use OSS at home.
