Optometrists - A Good One?

Growing old has brought gradual decrepitude to the sight department, for Mrs Cranky more than moi. Both of us have specs, but mine have remained fairly well unused for the last 10 years.

Not so for the child bride. Hers appear to be a magnifying type, rather than a correcting type lens. I cannot remember being asked any questions regarding how well I could see an object whilst being tested, rather the Optometrist seemed to look into the eye and come up with a correcting value.

The bride reports being asked, as various slides were introduced, “is that better, is that better?”

Her current specs are causing confusion when changing focus from say, a page in front of her to a cross table focus.

Are there different methods of establishing the problem, and the prescription supplied?

And who is recommended for a FAQ job?

There’s a black Canadian guy who works at “The Optical Superstore” 28-36 Ainslie Ave, he did my last test and fittings for specs, what with me being a speccy bastard and that. I was very impressed with his professionalism and the service I received. (Though obviously not so impressed as to remember the chap’s name!)

Highly recommended.

His name is Faran Sabeti!
Have been going to him since i was 16. He is great! and really funny…
His wife also tests at The Optical Superstore. She is more patient with children. But Ron (thats what he calls himself) is better with the older patients. My dad goes to him for regular checks, will not see any other person. Apparently he is a researcher at ANU too. So, you are in good hands!

Wouldn’t go anywhere else – support locally owned small business!!!

another vote for Langley & Pino

I’m happy to agree with Gin02. I use Specsavers Belconnen as they are convenient for me. I have had appointments with both of their optometrists and both were professional and provided a good script.

To the OP, I’m not sure what age group your partner is, but I was warned some years back by an optometrist that, as I got older, I’d have trouble with up close vs far away, and I can feel it happening. My glasses have always corrected short-sightedness and astigmatism, but they only cut in when things are far away.. I don’t feel the change. However lately, I have felt effort in focussing on things up close (books etc) and then having to re-focus on things further away. Very annoying if doing hobby-stuff, and then glancing up to look at the TV.

eventually, you lose the ability to focuss on things close up, and have to get bi-focals or special reading glasses. Not looking forward to that, people who are constantly taking their glasses off/putting them on are a pain.

I can thoroughly recommend Carolyn Galloway at Eye Q optometrists in Queanbeyan. Worth the trip out east! I’ve used her services for years and never had anything less than excellent advice.

A block north of the main drag, almost opposite the Riverside Centre open air carpark.

He’s an excellent optometrist.

I never look forward to updating my glasses/contact prescription. I’ve found my regular optometrist to be a little off when it comes to working out what strength is needed. Case in point, about 4 years ago, it took three attempts to get the strength of my glasses right. My last contact strength update took two attempts to get right. They always seem to over correct, which makes everything over sharp and headache inducing.

However last time the script got updated, I went to Specsavers in Belco (it was an emergency appointment as I had snapped my glasses, was due for an eye test and my usualy people were booked out for weeks) The optometrist got the strength right first try (and she’d never seen me before and had no idea of what my previous ‘jumps’ in strength had been). Much more positive experience than what I usually have.

I’ve been very happy with James Simpson optometery in Civic. Great service from a really nice guy. I wear contacts, but he does have a very good selection of frames.

All optomitrists should ask which is better when testing your eyes, they should also have a range of tests and instuments. Does your partner have bifocals? it shoulds like she should, or may have astigmatism. An updated prescription usually impresses me with how clear the world can be.

For over 15yrs I’ve found Mark Feltham to be excellent:

I agree. Mark is very good.

Another happy Langley and Pino customer (Langley is known as one of the best optometrists around for kids with learning difficulties too).

can only recommend simpson optometry in the same arcade in civic where sammy’s used to be – very pleasant, very professional and i have had excellent service from the whole enterprise, as well as the man simpson himself being the business.

the eye place that advertises on teev, on west row, is a debacle and i wouldn’t recommend them. as bad as their ads.

The Langley from Langley and Pino has been doing right by me for the past 30 years.

But you have to look all over canberra to find frames.

I also have had very good service from Laubman and Pank (Tuggeranong store, in the Horrordome) for my last three tests (which I have every two years). But I never buy my glasses from them, because they’re terribly expensive. Just get the prescription and run!

Being cursed with having to make regular visits to the optometrist, I’ve noted that the technology they use improves every year. The methods and devices they use now are light years better than the ones from 10 years ago.

My recommendation is Langley Pino in the City.

Pretty much the only tests I can remember are being asked which of 2 slides is ‘better’. I’d be skeptical of any eye-doc that just looked into my eyes and came up with a prescription…

I’ve had good luck with Laubman and Pank in Woden.

Asking you is this better, a or b, 1 or 2 is how they eliminate all other possibilitites
