On YouTube “Cheesetoasters” has enriched our lives with video of Canberra’s otters at play in the National Zoo and Aquarium.

Forget white lions, otters steal the show every time.

It’s true – Otters while very cute are also very vicious!

they’ll do you a treat mate!

If you ever encounter one in the wild you’d best ensure you’re carrying the ‘Holy Hand-Grenade of Antioche’. Otters too have “big pointy teeth…”

but thou shalt not count to 4, and 5 is way out.

and if all else fails, run awaaaayyyyy!

Maybe they’ll make the otter version of this http://www.amazon.com/Toy-Vault-Death-Pointy-features/dp/B000B8X01W

LOL! Me-thinks I will get me one of them for Easter.

…..This sounded kind of funny until the otter-wrangler pointed out that an otter can bite through a boot and your Achilles tendon (severing it) without too much trouble. Cute, but vicious little buggers.

I bet they couldn’t chew through Nicole Kidman’s nose!

The otters would have won that one too, if they didn’t invent fish.

They have also devolved somewhat in the past thousand years. I understand they used to share power with humans in what is now known as turkey. They called it: the Ottor-man empire.

Why have otters not been used as a biological weapon of mass destruction? That is what I can’t understand? Do I have to think of everything?

On a zooventure tour, I was informed by one of the otter-wranglers that you should never enter the pen unless you can see them all. The ones you can see will distract you (by gambolling adorably in the shallows) while the one you don’t ambushes you. This sounded kind of funny until the otter-wrangler pointed out that an otter can bite through a boot and your Achilles tendon (severing it) without too much trouble. Cute, but vicious little buggers.

Mogo zoo is also privately owned and funded and they have Meercats to boot 🙂

I fully recommend it to everyone as well, I have been there twice

Hey, it could have been a very different kind of film if Cheesetoasters had gone in for the pat …!

Well, I am shocked …. Reconfiguring …. Reconfiguring ….

+1!

I wonder if we’ll see a series called Otter Omnibus or something? Meerkat Manor was the best thing on TV a few years back. That Flower was an absolute nazi.

Otters are almost amphibious Meerkats.

‘Apparently they’re like land-based piranhas and will have your finger off quicker than Milat on a slow day in chokey.’

That is VERY clever!

Aww so cute. I love meerkats too.

I don’t believe you! This calls for an experiment. I just need a volunteer.

I’m not a huge fan of zoos but the Mogo Zoo is absolutely superb and well worth a visit if you’re in that part of the world (about 20-ish kms south of Batemans Bay). The otters there are similarly capable of happily distracting anyone for copious amounts of time with their antics. You can spend a whole day there just drifting around for enclosure to enclosure with extremely authoritative commentary by the zoo personnel.

A warning: do not even think for a minute of trailing a hand into the otter enclosure. Apparently they’re like land-based piranhas and will have your finger off quicker than Milat on a slow day in chokey.

vicious beasts. worse than a great white shark.

Oh, I do hope that’s a trivia question!

The meerkats at Dubbo zoo are awesome. You can sit there and watch them all day.

What? Otters?

i love the otters at the zoo the best too!!!! i don’t reckon you’d want to fall in their enclosure though – all over red rover.

Cajun Squirrel crisps!

*hehe*

Surely they wouldn’t dare!

They probably taste like ferrets. Fishy ferrets.

Might end up on the shelves next to the hedgehog flavoured crisps.

Oh, BerraBoy68, you so do not know that!!

I like otters because they know how to have fun.

And they taste like chicken.

Otters are cool. They are the most entertaining thing at the zoo.

I like otters. They’re such weird looking creatures, with some very clever tricks like using rocks to open crabs.

I caused considerable amusement at ski school line up at a big resort in the US some years back, as we were discussing how it was that beginners approaching the meeting point always were obviously beginners. My contribution: “You can always tell they’re beginners, as they carry their equipment like a bundle of firewood, and angry greased otters”. Next time you go skiing, watch the first-timers trying to wrangle their gear out of the rental shop.
