FOREIGN embassies in Canberra will refuse to pay their rates to the ACT Government in a diplomatic row over “unjustifiable” fee hikes and potential breaches of international diplomatic conventions.

The Australian is reporting that the ACT government rate rises announced in the budget have got our fair cities diplomats in a lather – It seems that they feel it’s unreasonable to be paying such high rates for their embassies in Yarralumla, Griffith, Red Hill and Forrest.

US Embassy are notoriously bad in claiming immunity when they don’t want to face up to their responsibilities.

I still remember bonfires story of the diplomat who pranged the stanley steamer.

Put a smile on my face.

I seem to remember an article in the canb times about diplomatic traffic fines, and how some embassies refuse to pay. at one point it seems we used to publish lists of major offenders in the hope of shaming them, but this has been abandoned (not sure why).

i would like to find out who they are.

Pull your head in Kirk. Very rarely do embassy staff carry on like indignant porkchops. They are chosen to represent their country in diplomatic circles bercause they have the ability to decide between right and wrong in a moral and legal sense.

only because they dont want the bad press…

Isn’t it like traffic fines … diplomats can’t be forced to pay, but most countries choose to play the game?

Thumper, embassies are obliged to play the game of the given state/country/principality that they are based in. The pay-off is that we must do the same over in said location where our embassy/consulate is based.

Stanhope might have bitten off more than he can chew if he pisses the Israelis off!

“Unfortunately, they’ve chosen to base themselves close to Parliament House, in some of the most desirable areas of Canberra — probably the most valuable property in Canberra,”

If you cant afford the prices, move. Just like every other Canberran who has faced this problem.
