Joy Burch is claiming the credit for Canberra children’s literacy and numeracy results.

ACT Minister for Education and Training Joy Burch welcomed the release of the My School website, which includes 2012 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results and capital and recurrent expenditure for individual schools.

“The information on the My School website reinforces the overall strong performance of ACT schools, which are, in part, the result of significant investment by the ACT Labor Government over more than a decade,” Ms Burch said.

“In the 2012 NAPLAN, ACT students excelled in reading performing well above the national average. Across most areas of NAPLAN, ACT students continue to be among the highest performing in the country; top or equal top across 16 of 20 areas tested.”

The My School update also shows that investment in public schools by the ACT Government is well above the national average for expenditure per student.

“The results show that ACT public schools had the second highest expenditure per student after Northern Territory schools, with a net recurrent income per student of $13,562 in 2011, which represents an increase of 3 per cent from 2010.”

With the wealthiest and best educated parents in the country one suspects we could do these results standing on our heads.

She’d want to be making a positive announcement after the doozy of a week she had last week – what with the application for Women’s Day not being done by her own dept. and not knowing where the kids are.
