Urban Services have released the figures behind the hype of the outdoor cafe rent rises. You can expect over the coming days that the cafe industry will be telling us all that they can’t afford a doubling of the price, and while that does sound quite dramatic, even if it is over three years, the rise in dollar terms is only $10.50 per square metre a year.

According to the relatively unheard of minister, John Hargreaves, Canberra has one of the lowest outdoor rents in the country and likens the increase to “the price of probably one cup of coffee a week”.

It is the first non-inflationary rate increase in six years.

ABC News has a story about civic cafes complaining about outdoor rent…was my crystal ball right or was it right?

Brendan Smyth has his views up here.

I love how fostering street culture is a huge part of the Government’s stated plans but do you think they’ll do anything to help it?
