consensus on gay marriage

Adam wondered why his friend wanted the camera in such a hurry, and while many of us will be a bit disappointed by the depth of field, I think we can all agree it’s an awesome photograph of East Row outside the Phoenix of a night.

Wow. If everyone on this board unclenched at the same time, the sound of poles hitting the ground would be deafening…

It’s a wonderful photo, a great snap of night life in Canberra… Perhaps more here should go out an experience it, instead of venting at the universe on here..

Yes, I have to add my vote of disapproval that this is on RA as well. I’ll bet if he didnt have glasses and a beardette you wouldn;t have shown that picture.

Ere, has anyone noticed what is the background?

Thumbs up for the subject/s: Adam, one of the loveliest guys you could ever hope to meet, and the anonymi, the picture of human connection. Nice light. Evocative capture. The caption, IMHO, did no favours to the act of sharing this post with what had potential to be an appreciative public. It brought ‘perviness’ to the forefront of readers’ minds. Hell, someone earlier asked if the pic would have existed if it was backdropped by two guys in an embrace. Answer: if I’d been present with a camera, yes. Definitely. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; LONG LIVE LOVE.

I called this juvenile because there is nothing remotely of interest in this to anyone whose mind functions beyond “Two chicks kissing… hur hur hur!”

Yes, Virginia, there are gay people. Get over it.

No-one is calling for “equal representation”. The RiotAct somehow thought that two women kissing was unusual, or perhaps that enough straights would get a kick out of the picture for no other reason than it’s two women, that it was deemed post-worthy. Editorially, this should have been a “so what” and digitally binned.

If they aren’t out to their Mum or friends, will the world be a nicer place if they’re outed on The Riotact?

Anyone who’s worried about being “outed” will hardly be making out in such a public place, will they? Their friends have just as much chance of walking past as they do of seeing this on the RA.

For some reason, people are very determined to portray gays as the victims of some massive homophobic conspiracy perpetrated by the rest of society. To the point where anything that could be viewed as even remotely hurtful to the feelings of homosexuals seems to be labelled homophobic and inappropriate. Are gay people really that fragile? None of my gay friends are and I think that most of the females would actually be turned on by a picture like this.

Your female friends who are gay get turned on by a woman looking at another womans necklace? wow

But if someone picks on say, a cop, the comments on here are all ‘harden up princess dry your eyes’…

Now that is what I find beautiful.

Charming, Chaz. Just because you can legally be an arse to people doesn’t mean you SHOULD. And that goes for both calling people names for having an opinion, making your otherwise valid point seem like it’s written by a teenager, and distributing photos of incredibly personal moments without asking if they mind. If they aren’t out to their Mum or friends, will the world be a nicer place if they’re outed on The Riotact?

The blonde one looks like Kelly McGillis, Top Gun vintage.

who likes short shorts?

And again, Riot Act tarnishes its reputation as a stellar local news service but posting rubbish like this .. truely juvenile, a shame really.

Could you please lend your glasses to Adam’s mate?

Sorry JB but I think I will be cancelling my premium sub over RA posting this photo.
To take a moment of passion like this and post it for everyone to have a snigger is quite appalling. Any beauty in the image is ruined by the way it is framed by the man laughing in the foreground, and the fact that the women (or woman/man?) don’t know what is happening.
I wanted to support independent media by subscribing, not support a site that is happy about potentially embarrassing two young people. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

Have a cry princess. It is a nice photo no harm done. If you want to be bored then go to CanberraTimes.com.

Definitely no kissing happening there, and it looks like it is a guy with long hair, helping his gf. What is all the fuss about, people?
Look at the comments-most posted on Saturday-don’t you people have a life? 🙂 Take it easy!!!!

Fairly poor form in running this, I reckon. No news or real interest content beyond voyeurism.

Get over yourself. If they were embarrassed about their behaviour, then they shouldn’t behave that way in a PUBLIC PLACE. I doubt they care.

Kath said :

I doubt he planned to tap them on the shoulder afterwards and ask if he could distribute a picture of them to the world, so isnt it a good thing that it’s blurry?

Sorry this just seems super juvenile to me: “ooh, gerls kissing, give me your camera right now!”

Photos taken in public places do not need permission from the subjects to be distributed.

joetheruffian8:23 pm 23 Oct 11

To clarify what is actually going on in this image: Adam had a camera, I asked to borrow it. He thought I was just taking a picture of him, yet I had my eyes on the pair behind, making out. So let’s not be hatin’ on Adam. Blame me for this disgustingly juvenile image of canberra at 1.30 in the morning.

On the other hand, I think Adams’s got some explaining to do…

is that a shirt or jacket he’s wearing?

God in heaven….get a life

I dont think that they are kissing, body language is wrong. Maybe its the cut-off denim shorts?

The guy in the photo looks like the sort of person our parents warned us we would end up looking like if we masturbated too much.

At first I thought it was two people kissing, but on closer inspection I’d have to agree with the earphones interpretation.

As for the expressions of disapproval…should RA have a policy of equal representation to ensure balance and avoid the judgementalism we see ever ready to spring from the fingertips of the grumpy?

The post would then have required a heterosexual couple, two men, two women, and a range of other photos involving intersex people with each other and with gay and straight people too, just to avoid any hint of stereotyping partner preferences. To snap a photo like that out front of the Phoenix, they’d need to move to bigger premises. And we all win.

Nice photo of Adam. Didn’t notice the other bits till you guys started banging on about it!

it’s an excellent reflection on canberra as a progressive city in that such a couple can be open in the CBD without copping verbal or physical abuse .

Get two blokes to try that outside shooters on a Saturday night.

I should lay off the bongs too.

Alright. Now time to contribute something of substance to the thread.

I was recently shown a canvas oil painting called something along the lines of ‘Hand of God’. In the picture was two hands in an ‘ET’ pose – that is two very human looking hands opposing each other with the index fingers extended out towards each other, but not yet making contact. One was God’s hand, the other belonging to Adam from the fairy tale ‘Garden of Eden’. I didn’t at all find the picture interesting until I was asked ‘Which hand belongs to Adam, and which hand belongs to God?’

I think we can draw a nice artistic analogy in this one, which is very relevant to many minority groups in Canberra. There is no way of knowing true gender of the unfocussed pair, or their actual activity. I think it is an accidental piece of photogrpahic magic.

That’s a nice shirt he’s wearing

…and stay out!

The blonde is doing something (fixing her friend’s makeup? removing a bit of parsley from the side of her friend’s lip?) The “own ear hold” is a bit of a mystery, but – nuh. They’re not kissing.

yes we can debate the merits of publication or motivation behind taking/sending the photo in the first place, but more importantly than either of those matters is that most of us would surely agree it’s an excellent reflection on canberra as a progressive city in that such a couple can be open in the CBD without copping verbal or physical abuse both in the real moment it happened and also in this thread.

Are you taking the piss? All the inappropriate comment on this site over the years and this is the straw that broke the camel’s back?

Who is being sexist here? Are you suggesting men (other than Fabio) cannot have long hair?

got to agree, very disappointing that this is photo has been posted to this site. JB would have expected better

It does beg the question; Is the blond a really noisey kisser?

Looks to me like that nice blonde lady is helping her friend adjust the earphones on her iPod. What’s everyone getting so uptight about?

I do not think they are kissing anyways, who plays with their own ears whilst kissing another person anyways…………

joetheruffian12:17 pm 22 Oct 11

Grumpy lumps, it’s a male and a female kissing. RELAX

Agree with Kath, and “juvenile” is being polite. Would this have been posted if it was two men kissing?
