Owen sucks up and moves forward

Canberra’s Owen Campbell got a second shot on Australia’s Got Talent, said what the judges wanted to hear and moves on in the show.

I’m glad for him he gets the continued exposure. Glad for the Canberra music scene that one of their own is finally getting mainstream exposure which will get more attention for the talent in this town waiting to be discovered by fatuous talent gatekeepers.

But a part of me is sorry he didn’t just flame out with:

My aim isn’t to be in a boy band, chief

I’m still going to watch to see where he goes with the show though.

(And if you’re interested I still think our 2007 interview is worth a listen)

I ll tell you that Owen has sold a healthy amount of albums because of this exposure. As long as he doesn’t win, he’ll be in profit.

Actually; after tonight’s A Current Affair article (I was actually looking for my ‘candy TV’; The Block) about Australia’s got Talent; I’m feeling more like this whole thing was manufactured (than I already did). Got a feeling Media Watch is going to be interesting this week…

It is a bit too over the top to be real – but who knows.

Keep in mind that ACA is a channel 9 show. Do you really expect anything they have to say to be complimentary to the opposition, or portray their show in a good light?

Or think of it this way – if channel 9 thought that running a particular story on ACA was likely to cause their viewers to watch a show on channel 7, would it ever be broadcast? Rival broadcasters aren’t in the habit of promoting each others shows positively.

I avoid ACA and Today Tonight like the plague – I’d love to know how many ads for ‘The Voice’ were shown before and after this particular segment though. Did channel 9 just throw all pretense of this being anything but a hack on the opposition out the window by having the presenter plug The Voice too? I’d not be surprised in the least if they did.

I guess at 28, he has decided the busking and the obvious skill have only got him so far. Due to last week’s efforts; he’s a standout in that comp already. He’s not so much sucking up, as being respectful to those who have a chance of helping him get that next step. And like it or not – they certainly are in a position to enable that next step .

Exactly. It is basically a job interview for a job he chose to apply for.

I am sure he wants to earn a comfortable living, as most of us want to as well. Once you get that financial independence you are much more free to pursue your dreams and aspirations.

There are many artists out there who cringe about their first commercially successful album. But they actively pursued that success and now realise that is what gave them the freedom to do what they really want to do.

Of course there are lines people will not cross -{“My aim isn’t to be in a boy-band chief” pure gold! } but we all decide where these lines are ourselves no matter what field we are in.

I don’t understand it.
Owen has talent.
So, WTF is he sucking up to a boy-band loser, Danni Minogue and some other fat twat?
It’s incomprehensible the damage record labels and pokie machines have done to our music industry.

I wish him well, but don’t forget – there’s always the Myles Barlow option.

Nice one Owen! We have one of your albums bought when you were busking and it’s great. To all those who say he shouldn’t be sucking up and apologising – If it gets him $250,000 to help him out who cares! Do what you have to do 🙂

It’s because he wants to make a living from playing his music. I agree the industry is in a bad way but you can’t compare 2012 to what happened years ago. Everything has changed. It is damn near impossible to make it these days and shows like this one give people an opportunity to take their careers somewhere. It’s an opportunity that may not occur just busking or playing pub gigs. It’s sad but true. You can’t knock someone for trying to make a living out of something he is so passionate about. Good or bad… this is how it is. All power to him.

You can see the cogs turning ” maybe that arrogant vibe I give out all the time seemed bad on tv, I want to be on tv, I’ll change!” It will all feel less violating sitting shotgun with Kyle in his Bentley after a long Sydney lunch sharing stories about being awful to people……..very Robert Johnson………..

Popular music used to be about rebelling against authority. Now it’s all about sucking up to the man.

And here was me thinking it was about music people liked to hear.

Oh yeah, that too. It’s actually about a lot of things, come to think of it. I take that back – Sticking it to the man has always been a minor component.

Yes a white dude playing slide to funky beats, get in line girlfriend……….

I preferred him surly. I think there’s plenty of surl left there. But nothing would get me to watch this programme.

As to the boy band comment, he has the arms for it, but he might say something inappropriate for the demographic. I do hope he annoys Karl Dandilands again though.

I thought his first performance/ song was better, although neither are really my cup of tea, but the guy is very good at what he does, he has talent.

It would have taken lots of guts to do what he did, he could very well have blown it or been setup for a humiliation (good tv) on national tv. He did well.

Good on the guy and lots of luck to him.

The dude can sing/play. Good luck to him, I hope he’s able to use that s***e show on an even s***ter TV station for good, haha.

I thought he lost heaps of cachet and cred. He actually didn’t need to apologise – they wanted him back for the ratings (The Voice is killing them).

Mind you, Danni still looked as though she was sucking on lemons!

I don’t understand it.

You done good Owen.

And if you (or anyone else) ever start to doubt, just go back, play it again and listen to the crowd at the end.

Thanks for your great performances out front of the Canberra Centre too. Love it!
