Owner Found - Lost Dog Found its Way Home

Good Day Rioters,

I wanted to say a big thank you to the Lady who came knocking at my door this Easter Sunday. She had seen this beautiful dog (who we will call M) thrown from a grey car, then nearly run over by the same car – I will spare you my comments about that driver. Shaken, she then followed M to our place, to check that it was OK. Thinking that M was ours she knocked on the door. Unfortunately this was not the case.

M was so timid, none of us could approach (ran away, not aggressive – at all). Unable to assit further, the lady wished us well then bid us adieu.

We notified the RSPCA and domestic animal services neither of which could provide any assistance. The RSPCA is not legally allowed to come and collect ‘stray dogs’ and Domestic Animal Services said that it was up to us to take it to the pound – So if you find a stray animal at your house you need to catch it yourself, put it in your car (now in a confined space with an animal you don’t know and who now feels trapped with a strange person whom just lassoed it) and drive it to the Mugga Lane Pound (which at least has kennels with food and water open 24/7) OR you turn a blind eye. Personally I do not see either of these as good options. Why don’t we have a dog catcher in Canberra?

Luckily my brother (a dog lover and use to dealing with other peoples dogs) came around for lunch. Between us, we caught M and calmed it down. We then called the RSPCA a second time to find out when their shelter was closing (it was a closer and has a higher success rate with finding the owner) and was told that we would have less than 15min to get there – BUT there had been a Missing Dog Report filled in matching M’s description and suggested that we call them.

We called and the lady on the phone managed to describe M to the letter (no prompting) and we invited them over to collect M. (And Yes I checked the colour of the car before letting them in).

As soon as the owner arrived M’s ears poked up and became very energetic. It was a very nice reunion.

M had been out the front of the owners house with her son then disappeared. They had then spent the next few hours diving though the suburbs looking for M. Good thing they let the RSPCA know.

Thanks for reading – lets me get some of my frustrations out (Blank Blank Driver). And I would like you to ask yourself – what would I have done?

Again Thank You to the Lady knocking on my door – I know you were shaken by what you saw, but hope that you are in the mass of rioters and have some closer on the story.

Happy Easter to all,

Jack

the act of lady is really appreciated. i must say that the system should be revised or new proper rules should be made regarding it so that no such incident might occur in the future.

Yeah, I suppose the “grey car” had ACT plates?

If there’s a dog in your street attacking your children or barking all night, it’s no use at all just dumping it on a street elsewhere in Canberra. It’ll be back home within 48 hours, tops.
You really have to put the effort in to dump it at least as far as Cooma.

Makes me wonder why we even bother having number plates. As a kid my dad always said “if you see something bad and there’s a car involved, GET THE NUMBER PLATE”.

So no recording of number plate or any report of cruelty to relevant authorities?

Alas, no licence – the Lady was too shocked to get it. The RSPCA kindly told us that it makes it very difficult to report the cruelty as it can not be attributed to a specific individual.

Just phone Canberra Connect and tell them that there is a dog loose in your street, and you *think* it might be one of them pit bull dogs, and that it is menacing passers-by. They’ll soon send somebody out.

Good Thought – But then they may not be looking for the right dog

I often pick up dogs who seem lost, someone did it for me once when my dog got out so I try to return the favor. I just take the dog straight to the local vet who scans the microchip and calls the owner. Normally my vet will just let me leave the dog there until the owner comes. Once a dog I picked up had a registration tag so I just called Canberra Connect and quoted the number and they put me straight through to the owner. Another option is to check the lost dogs website. In this day and age reuniting a lost dog is very easy if people take the time to care.

So no recording of number plate or any report of cruelty to relevant authorities?

Well done Jack and the Lady who knocked on your door! I’m glad the story had a happy ending.
I’m absolutely disgusted by Blank Blank Driver and I’m disappointed with the system that leaves it to by-standers to figure out what to do. I completely understand your concerns about getting a strange dog into your car to take it…. somewhere…. before closing time….

Just phone Canberra Connect and tell them that there is a dog loose in your street, and you *think* it might be one of them pit bull dogs, and that it is menacing passers-by. They’ll soon send somebody out.
