Pangaea - a mini review

Upon finding Zierholz closed today, we decided to head over to Manuka to Pangaea. It’s been there a while, but I’ve never tried it. So we tried it. It’s in the bit of Manuka where the cinemas are, facing the Catholic church.

Very modern and zappy inside, dominated by a bar/servery. Lots of hard surfaces so it’s noisy. Our reception from the young guy behind the bar was friendly and jocular, the table service was prompt, friendly and smooth. We were served during the meal by a variety of people, who were excellent. They were all friendly, right on the mark re timing and knowledge, they knew their stuff. They seemed to be a happy lot.

Well, the food. Here’s a menu:

I as always was happy to discover pizza on the menu, and chose a something-osa, with salami, bocconcini and mushrooms. this turned out to be quite a spicy pizza, with a lot of hot flavour going on. I don’t know how they’d done it, but the whole (dried up) mushrooms were bursting with flavour too. Good crust! Hand pressed-out, thin, and with that slightly buttery flavour good crust has. I guzzled it up.

I notice on their online menu they sometimes have a mega-hot one, with habaneros, but not today.

Other meals consumed: the yellowfin tuna dish, and the medley of mushrooms risotto balls.

The Tuna thing was lumps of tuna which appeared to have been briefly seared but quite rare, with a sharp/sweet sauce drizzled over it, and lumps of something yellow served on a long, thin, bagette-shaped serving thing that was about 1.5 feet long!

The Risotto balls looked a bit like falalfel, friend balls of a risotto that had porcini, something truffly and mushrooms in.

Both meals were rated as excellent and both plates cleared of all visible consumable food.

They have the menu on all day and into the evening, and you choose what you feel like from big, small, elaborate or normal.

We had the 3 meals, 3 glasses of house chardy and 2 Crownies, and the bill came to $81. The only negative was the attitude from the guy at the bar (different guy) when we wanted to pay separately. I guess it’s inconvenient for them and all, but it’s a reality. So we got a pen, and worked out who owed what. and that was that.

All up, a very pleasant place to spend a dawdling Sunday afternoon, and I shall add it to the small list of places where you can get a decent pizza.

I went there last week and had various tapas dishes. I had the soft shell crab, the haloumi, the duck pancakes and the dips with ciabbatta bread. All of them were absolutely delicious and the service was on point (if not a bit overly flirtatious). Those four dishes, plus four vodka cranberries and a mineral water came to about $80 which I thought was pretty good for such a yummy meal.

i had a very yummy thai pizza there a few weeekends ago. very nice.

We don’t want Holy Grail to feel left out of the sweat-shop family either…..

‘Pangaea and Zefferelli’s – underpaying migrant workers = no business from this black duck’

I’ll second that. I wont have anything to do with this show pony wash up of a business and I suspect those that do either have NO idea of what Pangaea actually represents or they support it.

Yep, Josh is the new guy thats just come up from Melbourne, and the service he and his staff deliver is sensational, just the same as the food.

I’ve been there twice in the last two weeks, and the food has been to die for both times, along with them havingthe best duck pancakes in existance!

I hear Pangaea has brought up a new chef from Melbourne and it’s really made a difference. I used to avoid this place as I felt it was a bit too cool for school, but recently went for a tapas-style dinner – lots of seafood, scallops, soft-shell crab – couldn’t believe the difference from the last time I was there (nigh on three years ago!). I had all manner of staff popping over to the table every now and then to check how we were going – I must admit I just don’t expect this level of service from Canberra wait staff these days, so I was actually quite flattered by the whole thing. Which is a bit ridiculous, but in short, I’ll go back as I felt welcomed and the food was just sensational.

Caphs is so gay. Charmers are better IMHO

I stopped going there, no ones coffee is good enough to put up with the perrenial rude staff. How dare they look down their nose at me, they are the ones working at night for a minimum wage job…

Caphs is much better..

Give the degustation menu a crack, but make sure you go on an empty stomach. And you MUST finish every meal with a shot of hot chocolate – slobber, drool.

Aren’t they the ones who were underpaying migrant workers last year?
