In 2007 Claire Connelly saw a gap in the Canberra Graphic Design market for a studio that was concerned with the environment in the practice of design and print. Claire started Papercut with the vision of offering clients a service that carefully considered design in terms of the life cycle: production, use and disposal. As a result of this vision Papercut have developed several printed products that come out of one single sheet of recycled or part recycled paper stock. Utilising this clever concept saves the client money, time, ink, paper and energy and ultimately provides a better outcome.
Papercut have a particular focus on clever design and layout solutions that save on paper, ink and emissions throughout the complete process. They engage suppliers and printers who have environmental credentials and conscience that match the Papercut values and ethics. Claire says, “In this current market of climate change concerns, government and private business owners are actively searching for suppliers who can meet their needs while ensuring that their carbon footprint is minimised”. Papercut are eager to inform their clients that using paper to print on is not the irresponsible act it may once have been. There is now a system for procuring timbers from environmentally managed forests. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody applies to the paper trail from well-managed forests to the end consumer and Papercut recommends FSC stock to their clients.
In an increasingly online age, Papercut actually encourage their clients to print beautiful promotional business products. Claire says, “We have noticed that everyone has turned to their screens to communicate with their market, yet we are promoting a return to the old fashioned (snail mail) letter and in doing so this will help our clients stand out from their competitors. Our special diagonal fold letter template does not require an envelope. Printed on quality recycled paper and hand addressed it will most certainly get more attention than the onscreen version. People are suffering from information overload with bulging email inboxes and animated invitations – it’s time to stand out from the crowd. Papercut can help you re-discover print and communicating with your market on paper, sure it will take more time than flicking emails out to your database at the click of your mouse, but chances are your clients are deleting as fast as you’re sending. A simple letter will get attention and more than likely grow your business because you have connected with your clients on a more personal level and been distinctive in your marketing.”
Recently Claire Connelly the creative director of Papercut won the ACT Chamber of Women in Business award for ‘Business Woman of the Year’. Claire won this award for demonstrating leadership, tenacity, compassion, encouragement, and the pursuit of excellence. She is a role model for other businesswomen, by implementing new initiatives in the workplace, providing employment opportunities and being visionary.
