parcel lockers

A reader who does not wish to be named has pointed out that Australia Post now has parcel lockers available in the ACT:

It’s a convenient new way to receive parcels. Now, when you make an online order instead of having a parcel delivered to your home, you can have it delivered to one of our secure, 24-hour Parcel Lockers, to pick up anytime it suits you. It’s easy, simply register for this free service today.

Now the drivers even have an incentive to not even bother attempting delivery.

As soon as the over valued Australian Dollar finds its true value at about half of what it is now, people will start buying on-shore again (if there are any shops left) and Australia Post will end up with empty lockers.

Or really full lockers, if Aussie sellers have some motivation to get in on the online game.

As soon as the over valued Australian Dollar finds its true value at about half of what it is now, people will start buying on-shore again (if there are any shops left) and Australia Post will end up with empty lockers.

“Please note that from 1 January 2013, Australia Post will not accept domestic or international parcels from other carriers into our Parcel Lockers, unless those parcels are lodged by the carriers as Australia Post articles addressed to the recipients’ Parcel Lockers. StarTrack is a subsidiary of Australia Post, and parcels carried by StarTrack will be accepted for delivery into Parcel Lockers.

Where possible, customers are advised to check which shipping partners or parcel delivery provider/s are available on the website they’re buying from.”

Makes it a bit more difficult……..the only thing i’d use it for is wine, “grocery run”, or “catch of the day stuff”…….so how do you find out who they all use?
What about overseas stuff that’s transferred to a local Aussie courier…you’ve no chance of finding out so you can’t use it.

Just a follow up, these are now available in Tuggeranong, Reed Street South – you can register at http://auspost.com.au/personal/parcel-lockers.html

I’ve been keenly waiting for these to arrive. For some time I’ve been using my work address for delivery of courier packages, now seeing as the city post office is just around the corner from work, I can do the same for regular parcels. It’ll be nice to be able to not plan around expected deliveries any more.

Which is why I’ve been baffled for a while about Australia Post parcel delivery drivers not making an effort to make deliveries. Surely, knowing that these systems were coming and that they have the potential to make their jobs redundant, they should have been making an effort to make themselves valuable and needed?

It is free to use.

If you don’t collect from the locker within 48 hours, then the parcel gets moved to the post office for old-style collection during business hours. They notify you by SMS and/or email.

I’ve registered but not yet been notified to pick up anything!

Something they should have had 20yrs ago. Can’t count how many times over the years I’ve had to go into the business centre to pick up a parcel. Every other time I go to the post office, someone walks in to pick up their parcel only to be told it’s at the Business Centre. Just seems so expensive and wasteful sending trucks out and about.

Question is will private courier companies get on board with this. Most international couriers don’t allow parcels to be dropped with Australia Post, hence I’ve gotten well use to heading out to UPS on the other side of town.

These don’t sound too different to PO boxes except electronic and dynamically allocated (which is pretty cool). They still can’t receive items from couriers or where POI is required, which is a shame.

Only available in Civic for the moment. It does seem to be free though.
