Parenting can be one of the most rewarding occupations. But it can also be one of the most challenging – a challenge that many parents do not believe they have the skills required to deal with.

In a recent survey, only a third of parents thought that the skills required to be a good parent came naturally to most people. Interestingly, the older the parent the more likely they were to believe that good parenting skills were developed over time through experience and help from other people.

However, according to the survey, one in three fathers did not know where to they could turn for help.

Parentline ACT is working enhance parenting in Canberra by providing help to parents experiencing difficulties. Parentline provides a free confidential telephone service for parents and families where calls are answered by workers who are professionally trained to help you with information and support. The assistance provided is confidential, immediate and anonymous. Staff provide callers with counselling, guidance, information about parenting issues and programs offered by other agencies, and, if needed, referral to other organisations.

In the lead up to Fathers Day, Parentline is encouraging fathers to seek help with the challenges of being a dad before they get too much.

Parentline can be contacted on 6287 3833 between 9am and 9pm Monday-Friday or check out their web site at http://www.parentlineact.org.au
