Park and Ride should move from EPiC to Well Station Road

By Leon Arundell - 21 May 2012 15

At 8.40 this morning I took a photo of ten cars in the $300,000, 100 space, Park and Ride car park opposite the entrance to EPiC.

That means a mere ten less cars on Northbourne Avenue, and MORE cars on the congested 3km stretch of Flemington Road from Well Station Drive to the Park and Ride and the Federal Highway.

If the Park and Ride were moved 3 km to Well Station Road it would save participating commuters 6 km of driving – worth about $4 – each day. It would get them to Civic several minutes quicker because they would zoom through that section in the transit lane instead of at 20 km/h in the general traffic. And it would reduce congestion on both Flemington Road and Northbourne Avenue.

What’s Your opinion?

My confusion seems to have stemmed from people referring to Well(s) Station Road when they actually mean Well Station Drive. I had assumed you were talking about what is now Old Well Station Road (which runs along the back of EPIC).

Anyway, I get it now and agree that a Park and Ride facility at the intersection of Gungahlin Drive and Wells Station Drive sounds like a good idea – but it doesn’t solve the issue of the Northbourne Avenue morning carpark, which must be a pretty big deterrent to potential bus users.

such a Civic obsession. try the 757 Gungahlin to Russell and avoid the Interchange. Guaranteed a seat. Transfer to Barton on one of the 700’s. Don’t pay for parking. Come on team, join me — or they will axe the 757 for under-patronage

Pretty much a southern bypass of Mitchell.

You mean Northern, right?

I’ve worked out why you said southern, but the proposal on that map is not Well Station Drive. Well Station Drive already from Horse Park Drive, and across the top (northern end) of Mitchell to Gungahlin Drive.

My mistake, it is actually crossing Old Well Station Drive, not Well Station Drive.

Isn’t it strange how the road was always called Well’s Station Road – that was the spelling on all the maps and signs – but since Gungahlin was developed it has lost the possessive and become Well Station Road. Does anybody know why this happened?

All the well’s got s***ty houses built on them. Now there’s only 1 left.

Illiteracy.

Explained in the Gazettal of Well Station Road: http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/di/2006-242/current/pdf/2006-242.pdf or here by LDA: http://www.lda.act.gov.au/?/home/residential/wells

The homestead’s proper name was always Well Station, though it became commonly (and incorrectly) known as Wells Station. The housing estate is called Wells Station, however the road named after the station has been correctly (re)named.

You have to realise that that apostophe ‘s’, and the word ‘Flat” after Dairy on Dairy Road cost real money to include on the signs.

Should move the local budget into surplus in double-quick time.

I must be looking at the wrong maps, because I can’t figure out how Wells Station Road will (or could) be connected to Gungahlin Drive without tunnelling under Mitchell.

Probably! Its the road that crosses between Mitchell and Franklin, linking the GDE to Flemington, and on to Horsepark.

That aside the poor patronage of the Flemington Road Park & Ride is likely due to traffic congestion between Mitchell and Civic which makes the whole concept pretty useless. Who wants to battle the traffic on Flemington Road to park their car and then catch a bus that takes 30 mintes to travel 6km to Civic? Apparently about 10 people.

dvaey 3:26 pm 21 May 12

Wont this situation be changed once Well Station Rd is connected upto the GDE and Federal Highway?

Bluenomi said :

What the heck are you driving if it costs you $4 to drive 6kms?

Obviously something that makes it cheaper to catch the bus than drive.

It would also mean that people from the western suburbs of Gungahlin could go down the GDE and access it too…
