No doubt you will post the official press release but the new multi-storey carpark has opened today and as an employee coming from Hindmarsh Drive (East) I can only say yippee as no more turning into Yamba drive and then maneouvering through the back streets of Garran to get back to Hindmarsh Drive today.

Only the first 4 floors are open today and I think the whole 8 floors will open Christmas Eve.

So now your cars can stay cool and you don’t have to cross Yamba drive to get to the Hospital (I know my patients will be hugely relieved)

UPDATE: Katy Gallagher has now got a release out:

Staff and members of the public turned out to see the completion of the first stage of the new multi-storey Southern Car Park at Canberra Hospital on Sunday and Monday.

The car-park, which will be open for use by staff, patients and visitors from today, was very well received.

“The first stage in the opening of the car park will provide two floors of public parking and two floors of staff parking,” Ms Gallagher said.

“In the first stage of operation, Levels 1 and 2 will provide a mix of one and two hour time-regulated public parking while staff will have to access to parking on Levels 3 and 4.”

“The completion of Levels 5 to 7, and the resulting conversion of Levels 1 to 4 to public parking, is expected to take place prior to all these levels opening on Friday, 24 December 2010” Ms Gallagher said.

Oh so we have the worst surgery waiting times in the nation but excellent hospital parking spot finding times…

If there are no longer hordes of people walking across to the hospital, does this mean the speed limit on Yamba will be increased back to 80?

Come off it. Little bits of 60 on otherwise 80kph roads are perfect for revenue raising. And the staff/visitors using the parking over the road have forgotten how to cross at the lights and now dawdle across anywhere they feel like (which they didn’t do when it was 80).

That’s why we moved to Canberra – coming from Sydney where you have to pay to park at hospitals and even then you can’t find a park its rather a joy.
And the fact that simply opening a car-park back on the hospital side has nearly halved my commuting time.

Woohoo! In how many places does opening a carpark justify a minister’s involvement and is also a spectator activity?

Awesome. Any trip to the hospital is generally stressful enough, it’ll be nice to not have to deal with the extra stress of finding a park.

My girlfriend needs regular visits to the hospital including fortnightly blood tests. Getting the blood test has always been the easy part, getting to the hospital/getting a park has been the hard part

Does that mean the buses will return to turning at Yamba Glen into Bateson Road (coming from the interchange), avoiding (in most cases) the two intersections up Hindmarsh drive (Yamba Glen and Palmer Street)?

Hooray, (slightly) fewer people using my apartment block’s visitor parking during the day. More importantly, one less thing for my neighbours to whinge about!

Ditto.
