Does anyone know of any free or reasonably priced all day parking around civic on the west side?

My company has moved to Gould Street Civic.

I don’t get that – pay for petrol money and a bus fare? Why not catch a bus from home? I’m glad my legs aren’t just painted on.

Park at the Hyatt for free and buy a 10 ride bus ticket and get the bus into the city from the Albert Hall stop. Ends up being about $5 a day which is cheaper than anything in the city, and it is right along the intertown route so you never have to wait long to get a bus.

And on the suitable days, it’s a very nice walk across the bridge and into the city.

I thought this was a pretty well-known trick, I mentioned it in the Barton parking thread last week. I doubt that it’s coincidental that the Treasury car park started filling earlier when parking charges went up in the city.

Thank you Ryan!

Wow, Ryan.. did you need to wipe your face just now?

The amount of cyber kisses you would’ve just got!

By my calculation it costs $2500 for parking. That means that I’m $1000 better off driving my two tonne 4WD to work than the person who takes the $1500 carparking allowance.

cool

Ok, so I did just RTFM….I still don’t agree with you.

There’s free parking over near the statue of the Unicorn. But is it a statue?

Morons….some (able-bodied) people can’t ride to work (push-bike, motorbike, or scooter) because they have to drop children off at school or day-care on their way to work. Do you suggest they all just hop on each others shoulders for the trip? Or how about strapping them to the old pack-rack? Also, if ever parents are called to come and pick up their child early as they are sick, being able to hop in the car and drive straight there is preferable to treddling home first to get the car then go pick them up. It’s just not practical.

Single. Single, single, single. RTFM.

Anyway I’m a parent and I either drop the kids off to the nearby daycare, nip home and then ride, or use a trailer. And if cars are so indispensable for parents, I’d imagine they would be the last ones to criticise a push to free up parking and roads for those who have genuine need. But no, they seem to whinge most of all.

Double moron!!! I’m neither single nor a parent…I just happen to be a bit more empathetic towards other people’s plights. How lucky for you that your daycare is ‘nearby’ and you can just ‘nip’ home to grab the bike. You must just love your living guts!

Well it didn’t take long for someone to wheel out the excuse of children in order to lament their parking woes.

Some years ago a (most likely smug) bike owner invented a device called the bike rack, allowing any person to carry a bike on the back of their vehicle. Said person could potentially park in a cheap/free car parking area within a kilometer or two of their workplace and take a leisurely ride to work – a trip that would take no longer than five minutes. (Which unless you were a morbid chair shiner isn’t nearly long enough to raise a sweat.) If little Johnny/Janey gets sick at school then it is only a quick pedal to your petrol-powered rescue chariot.

The only morons are those who fail to think outside of the square.

I fail to see how cycling could not be practical for any able-bodied person.

Possible reasons:

– Having a job in which you need to carry around large items which won’t fit on a bike

– Living too far away to cycle to work in less than a couple of hours

– As busgirl pointed out, having children who need to be dropped off/picked up from school

– Working in a job that requires you to run between buildings in different parts of Canberra during the day

– Concerns about safety when cycling alone in the early morning/evening.

As for motorcycles and scooters, not everyone is comfortable with riding these – do you really want nervous motorcyclists on the road? And if enough people start riding motorcycles they will begin to be charged for parking anyway.

My little treadlie lets me park for free, east west north and south. Every day. Means I spend up to $2400 per annum less than my work colleagues, money freed up for whatever indulgence takes my fancy. Well worth a few minutes pedalling in the morning and afternoon. Did I mention how much I save on pointless gym fees as well? Didn’t I? Gee, i could go on and on but just this once I’ll refrain, and just sit here smug as usual.

A smug cyclist! Wonders never cease.

Lack of showers and/or lockers. Don’t want to be stinkin’ it up in the office all day.

It doesn’t preclude them from riding a motorcycle or scooter.

No farking sympathy whatsoever for able-bodied single people who insist that the only possible means to get from A to B is using a one ton vehicle, and then argue that anything less is unsafe because there are too many one ton vehicle on the road, or that Australia’s inclement weather is totally unsuitable for such exposed transport.

I tip my hat to the governments and companies that seek to fleece these people.

Yse John, but think of your poor colleagues that have to sit next to you after you ride in.

sorry Flo – you will find great food and lunch options there and lots of office buildings but the parking is one of the worst any where – there is a small section of parking near the Turner Senior citz club on the street and in a dirt area (not sure of current prices) that would be more reasonable than in the middle – but you have to be an early worker to get those.

for those who drive, i wouldn’t wish city west on anyone.

Oscillate Wildly1:11 pm 26 Oct 10

It’s great that some people are able to cycle to work, but keep in mind it’s simply not practical for everyone.

Gosh I ride to the city from Tuggers in 45 mins. Cheap as chips.

Short answer is no.

Since the morons by the names of Stanhopeless and Barr continue to allow development on all carparks with practically no replacement parking, your options are basically city west multi story or 121 Marcus Clarke, early bird costs about $10-$11 min if you’re lucky to get a park. Otherwise you’re in for a long walk from the other side of the city, although it is still quicker than catching the bus.

How the government expect city west to attract people (visitors and business) when there is nowhere to park and we have a useless bus service is beyond me.. Planning and common sense are things the government clearly don’t have.

We have a guy here at work, he drives in from the Woden area & parks that far away that it takes him 20 minutes to walk it. What would that take? Up to 40 minutes?

I said to him that once his fitness is up he could cyle into work in 30 minutes.

He still drives.

No.
Try a Action bus, get a 10 ride ticket and pay $2.50 each way. Cheap.

Get a bike or motorbike. Then you can have all the free parking you want.

city west has plenty of parking but is isn’t cheap. $10.50 or $11.00 around the Lakeside end.

And once the DA is approved the $11.00 one will close – leaving a huge shortage of spaces.

You can walk over the bridge and park at the futsal slab for $6 but that is then a hike to the office area…..

Planning at its best…..

If you get to work around 630am, you can park in the disused Beaurepaires in Lonsdale St for free. Just make sure you park close to the entry with your car facing outwards, otherwise you’ll get blocked in til after 4pm.

If you start after 11am, you can park for free on the North side Haig Park in either Henty or Greenway Streets.
