Martlark has sent this in:

Spotted this van doing a spot of ‘innovative’ parking out side the Church’s centre in Belconnen.

Fair enough for someone making deliveries? Or is that what loading zones are for?

This is fantastic parking relative to the moving truck that parked ON Belconnen Way a couple of weeks ago at about 8:10 in the morning. Just put his hazards on about 100m short of the Coulter Dr intersection, and parked in the left lane of the road. Had the back door of the truck open too. Would have snapped a picture but was too busy merging into the right lane to get out of his way.

The lack of access for taxis and couriers in town centres was highlighted on last Friday’s Chief Minisiter talkback. Our restaurants, coffee shops ( even establishments that admit people with muddy boots) and more importantly our bars and bottleshops rely on trucks and vans to deliver their supplies daily. Hopefully Shane will keep this in mind when he starts fiddling with ‘traffic management’.

I sympathise with the driver, but only if he/she was making a quick delivery.

If there are regular problems with lack of loading zone space, the best long-term solution is either more loading zones, or better policing.

Many years ago I delivered bread in Sydney’s CBD, with tight deadlines and many small deliveries. If the loading zone was occupied, I would sometimes park illegally.

On one occasion I emerged from a delivery to see two parking inspectors next to the bread van, looking the other way.

As I went to drive off, one of them poked his head in the window and asked if I had any spare bread. I gladly gave him a loaf or two, rather than face a parking fine.

A couple of months later, a parking inspector was caught asking for bribes. I wasn’t asked for ‘spare bread’ again.

Has to unload the goods at that building presumably, has not blocked traffic, other van in loading zone, no problem here.

Absolutely no issue with this, I know that particular spot well and that is pretty much the only parking for a vehicle that size…Others may disagree, but its Riotact and everybody gets a fair shake of the sauce bottle..

I voted “bump up as needed” but my caveat is: as long as they’re not blocking access, thoroughfare or specially designated parking (like disabled spots).

These guys are usually only stopped for a few minutes and it’s important that they can stop, get in and get moving again as quickly as possible.
