parking

We loves us a good photo of bad parking.

Br1anL sent in the above gem with this note:

A photo taken at the The Canberra Hospital last night to put to your ever growing examples of great parking.

Really made my task of putting the kids in the car so much harder than was required.

I drive the same model van with no power steering. I reckon he’s done pretty well. Those underground car parks are tighter than a nuns …….. , well let’s just say they’re pretty tight and the turning circle on the Hiace is pretty woeful. Straightening up makes them a right bastard to reverse out too, especially when in a poorly lit car park full of dark coloured cars.

Get used to it, soon we’ll need gull wing doors on all cars.

Surely you mean scissor doors? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scissor_doors

Gull wing doors (such as those on the back to future car) would one exacerbate the problem.

You can’t actually be sure either way. It does look like the bulge is over to me, but the photographer is standing a little to the left of the line, which means the van will appear to be a little farther to the right than it actually is. /pedantry

If there’s 3 feet on the other side of the van, then there’s 3 feet on the other side of your car too.

Modern parking spaces are usually too small, full stop. Likely to get worse before it gets better.

When I reversed in i parked in the middle of the lines (aligned with the car which was previously there). The drivers side of the van had extra space because the pole was there which gives extra space. When ever I can I will park next to a pole, because then there is no chance of having a car park too close.

Sure he (she) was in the lines, but the 3 feet on the other side of the van really made it a no brainer. Reverse back out, and straighten up….it is not that hard to be considerate!! Just saying!

If there’s 3 feet on the other side of the van, then there’s 3 feet on the other side of your car too. Unless it’s a bongo van, which it isn’t. Yeah, it’s a pretty crappy park job. Only average crappy though – not world class.

Uh…. how do you know someone else wasn’t in the space next to him before he parked there?

Try driving a Ford F250 around a new carpark before you whinge about parking spaces.

What are you going on about? This is normal parking anywhere in Canberra. Due to the downsizing of parking spots in order to cram more cars into an area, without consideration for the size of actual vehicles, there is rarely enough room to open a door for normal people to exit their vehicle. Also the van and wagon have a greater turning circle than a hatchback, so without doing a 3 point turn and having the person behind blaring their horn impatiently, this is the result of normal parking practices in our futuristic city. Get used to it, soon we’ll need gull wing doors on all cars.

Yeah it gives me the shits when parking spots are so narrow that you can barely get out of your car and don’t start me on the dints in the side panels!

deal with it precious, the van is parked within the lines

can’t believe no one has made a whaaaaaaambulance joke yet.

Yes. Yes, you are.

As mentioned above at the rear door end, presumably where the kids were going the vehicles are parked at more or less equal distance from the white line, with the van maybe a poofteenth further away due to the angle its parked. So really don’t see the issue.

This series of articles is so lame. I’m currently in Paris, and all through Europe, people deliberately leave their handbrake off so that others can nudge, bash and bang their car into place to park. Canberra needs to stop being so precious about parking. Get over it. Just park your car, and stop taking photos of bad parking and posting it on the internet!

Isn’t there more important things to discuss…like why the Chronicle doesn’t honour “No junk mail” stickers!?

Am I missing something? The van is parked well within the lines

That’s not bad at all. Where you open the rear door the white van seems equidistant from the line. The design of the rear door in modern cars makes it difficult for the rear door to be open wide when in a car park. Don’t blame the car parked next to you.
