Parking fine or illegal advertising or something else?

While rolling down the GDE this morning (yes, I know it isn’t really an extension anymore, but GD doesn’t sound as good) I witnessed a scene I shall now describe (as I was operating a motor vehicle and couldn’t use my camera).

Parked on the ample verge, at 90° to the roadway, was a ute with a large billboard advertising the candadacy of one Tom Sefton. Near this van was a man dressed in the uniform of an ACT Government parking inspector. He was operating what appeared to be a camera (taking photos of the vehicle).

So, some questions:

    — will the ute be booked for illegal parking?
    — will the liberal party be booked for breaking some sort of advertising law?
    — is there some other potential infraction they might get?
    — is this a case of the current Labor/Green Junta using the apparatus of the state to brutally suppress opposing voices?

Anyone in the party wanna let us know if it actually got a ticket?

Why don’t the local parties have bio’s of their election candidates on their websites? Are they saving money by using Facebook instead?

I thought I’d click on the link in the OP to see who this guy is and it just points to Zed’s press release about who is running. I went over to the ALP website and couldn’t find a thing about their candidates.
Surely it wouldn’t be too hard to write up a couple of paragraphs with a photo for each of the them on their websites.

The only thing that struck me while driving past said ute was that it had out-of-territory plates. So, where does this dude live?

And you’re all now discussing the candidate.

His goal has been achieved.

Highlighting his unsuitability for public office?

No to be unsuitable for public office, he would have to be convicted of drink driving while serving as the Police Minister.

Funny you should mention that.

Many moons ago, a prominent fat Canberra man (and Liberal Donor) had a billboard-covered vehicle which he used to park on verges around the place in an attempt to advertise his business.

One day, a couple of nice young men from the ACT Government did their job and went and took it away, due to its persistent illegal emplacement on public land.

Shortly thereafter, one angry dummy-spitting fat man rang his mate of drink-driving-katie-Bender-catastrophe fame to demand his advertising vehicle back. Said catastrophe-woman promptly got onto those responsible for enforcing some of the Territory’s laws and regulations and gave them a massive chewing-out on account of them not excluding her mate from the enforcement of said laws, instructing them to personally return said impounded vehicle and apologise.

yes i know.. but i did try 🙂

Be sure to include the good Dr Kelly – the ALP Federal Polly who ripped off at least $2m in taxes/fees. Like taking candy from a baby, no lolly pop for you 🙂

The Kelly Gang (sorry to the original Kelly Gang for the ID trashing) – went about Canberra during the Rudd/Howard 2007 federal election and littered Territory wide. If they could not get access to private property they simply put graffiti onto public road carriage way advisement signage. Each instance of criminal damage required someone to clean the sign – thus a truck, driver, cleaner and chemical based cleaning supplies are also needed for each reported damage. The graffiti damage had the bi-line tag of ‘Kelly Country’, ‘1 Kelly’, and so on.

Not happy with the graffiti – said group with backing of a candidate that blind to neglect – who also seems to never of used 1 road in all of Canberra and southern NSW during the federal election campaign (or maybe it was all done for clean-up Australia), also went about fixing UNAPPROVED notices to public road carriage ways in the ACT and NSW. Police decided to not arrest drunks while driving past in their half million squad cars with CCTV. The white truck did have 4×2’s in-case these law breakers needed to make a quick get-away.

Some examples of unlawful acts include red/orange signs placed on the opposing lanes, fixing ads onto ACTEW power poles that blocked/obstructed access, and fixing signs over the top of speed and stop signs – even a zebra crossing wasn’t safe from having its signage blocked by unlawful advertisements. But the best ones were to place RED/ORANGE DOT stickers onto the opposing lane where a WHITE marker is required (near the air port, where a sign was also mounted ontop of a crest known for roo’s at night – its amazing that no one was actually killed).

As for the fee/tax, along with not paying 1 infringement notice for supply of paint/materials used in the commission of a crime of unlawful graffiti (that of advertisement on commonwealth property/crown land/ and ACT Government lease without permit and notifiable instrument to do so – with the intent to get paid for it by the AEC). The Kelly Gang by their actions have refused to pay RTA/ACT Roads, any advertisement fees, or seek to have their signage approved by work-cover. Plus the big bonus was to not pay local business!

In correcting the 2007 miscarriage of justice, the Stanhope Government and fact complaints were made to the AEC – the Standhope Government gave special rights to select members of social networks who are the people which may be elected to run for government. {someone above typed bar – i’ll have a few double JD’s thanks so I can think the way they do}. The same elected membership (unless ind), once elected have no responsibility but to drink as much as they can before not standing for re-election.

Not sure but currently – if Polly signs/message/advertisement are unprotected, as in no ones around – I think then, they are unlawful unless in one of the special places on some map of Canberra.

But as far as I know – Tom had car trouble 😉 wink.

Just think – a Polly who owns-up about something may be the change Canberra needs; But who knows how long that will last once voted in – no responsibility but to get re-elected, if they choose.

PS: if someone posts back the cant understand you – aka junk replies – then their a fool.

Just spoke to Tom, to answer one of the original questions he did get a ticket, about $83 I think. I don’t think he will be parking the ute in that section of the GDE again. He feels happy to make the $83 donation to the massive Labor gov blow out on costing for the GDE. I think it is an effective way to get his name put in the electorate. For the record I think he’s a good bloke and deserves to get elected, I feel happy voting for a bloke who has multiple degrees and has done two tours of duty in Afghanistan. No doubt a lot of rioters will get the opportunity to meet him at local shops or at your door step before the election.

How does serving tours of duty in Afghanistan make him a suitable candidate to for the ACT government? Don’t get me wrong. I fully support the our boys and girls serving overseas. Just not the politicians that sent them there.

if you want a little more info on the bloke and a picture of ute in situ, check out:

So he’s happy to break the law and create a traffic hazard for some publicity. Sounds like an arrogant prick to me. He’ll fit right in with the other Libs.

Lol. I think the bar is set pretty low these days.

The othe view is that rather than being ‘oppressed by the junta’, maybe in fact this guy is deliberately putting his car in illegal places because of the massive advertising exposure and being willing to take the risk, and if caught he’s budgeted for the tiny fine. $83 for a few days of advertising to thousands of people in his electorate – who cares about the rules?

Can you then please tell him & his mates to stop parking on the roadsides distracting traffic?

There was an older bald bloke doing this at the start of the Parkway in peak our. Stupid.

Did you know, Tom Sefton has the same number of syllables in his name as Matt Damon?

and “Tom Sefton” is an anagram of “Soft To Men”

I’ve seen it parked there every day and wondered why it doesn’t get towed away – like any other abandoned vehicle parked by the side of a major road?

Until people mentioned the name here, I didn’t remember it so the “advertising” isn’t that effective. To me it’s just some guy’s big head on a poster on an illegally parked vehicle.

And just another guy who wants to be paid to sit around spouting rhetoric.

That is what I thought. But for the couple of hundred dollars (at the most) that a parking ticket might run too, it is pretty cheap advertising for them.

Pretty crappy advertising though, you must admit.

I shudder to think that anybody in Canberra would base their decisions at the polling booth on whether or not they saw a sign board on the side of the road. Last territory election I pulled down Gulia with a G’s sign from a road near my house and peed on it.

Personally, I shudder to think that I might share a polling booth with someone who chooses to express their political views via urination, but I guess that’s just democracy at work…

I was a teenager then, couldn’t vote :p And I’ll be the first to admit that what I did was stupid and childish.

,,,was fun though 😀

I’m guessing because there are a lot of signs that say No Parking between Belconnen Way and Ginninderra Drive, he will be getting a ticket.

You are just an apologist for what the original poster correctly described as “a case of the current Labor/Green Junta using the apparatus of the state to brutally suppress opposing voices…”

God I love it when someone compares parking enforcement to an oppressive military government that has questionable constitutional validity.

No really it’s great.

Now that is democracy in action.

Considering a similar stunt was performed a few mornings back on the parkway (before the arboretum) which caused a traffic jam (for some reason, people had to slow down to <60 to see/read it), I for one will be voting *against* anyone I see advertising on the road side, incl this dude. I think it was the same guy in both cases. Can anyone confirm?
So, it might be free advertising, but it is negative advertising!

I draw your attention to the massive signs on either side of the road Northbound on GD about 800m from the Belco Way overpass which state:

‘[No Stopping] Area – Between Belconnen Way and Ginninderra Dr”

No conspiracy to it, just an illiterate candidate who will easily pay the fine.

If you are right, this also spells trouble for the ACT Pirates’ Galleon.
